Wedding anniversary on Mother's Day weekend??

Help!! I found this great wedding venue but the only open date is May 10th. I have no problem doing mother's day brunch the day after, I am worried about having my anniversary on mother's day weekend for my whole marriage. Does anyone have advice? Anyone with an anniversary in early May? I have to decide soon... May is just around the corner!

Re: Wedding anniversary on Mother's Day weekend??

  • Well, my DD's bday is May 10th and I have shared Mother's Day weekend with her a few times now.  I learned that if I wanted to do something special with DH we needed to plan it for the weekend before or after.  You don't have to celebrate on the day the calendar tells you to.  If you have families ( like we do) where Mother's Day is well recognized and celebrated, you might want to rethink May 10th if celebrating your Anniversary on May 10th is important to you.  In our family the mom's get the recognition on Mother's Day (and occasionally my DD who is also a mom now does too).

If you have families where there are Mother's Day dinners, etc and you are expected to be there, I'd rethink it.  If it is no big deal to you then go for it!
  • My wedding anniversary is Father's Day weekend. It's not as big of a deal as Mother's day, since people don't usually celebrate it as much, but we didn't have any problems.

My birthday is actually during Mother's Day weekend, and I've never had a problem celebrating.
  • As a mom I can tell you that what I want to do for mothers day and what I want to do for my anniversary are the exact opposite of each other so I wouldn't like it.  But PP is right, you don't have to celebrate on the actual day.
  • My parents' wedding anniversary is May 10! When we were younger, we celebrated them together when they fell on the same day; daddy would buy her flowers and my brother and I would give her gifts. Then daddy usually took her out to dinner later that week.

Now that we're both adults and either married or almost married, we do Mothers Day that weekend and they do they anniversary separately.

But my mom isn't a big celebration person, so that's also a factor.

  • You do realize Mother's Day always is a Sunday, while May 10 falls on every day of the week. That means your anniversary will be on Mother's Day only once every seven years or so? The "or so" is the way Leap Day screws around with the calendar, which I'll never understand.
  • Yes i realize that, im more worried about the fact that the closest weekend to my anniversary will be Mother's Day weekend, and that might make it difficult for romantic getaways when we have children.
  • Vacations can be rescheduled or rearranged around other holidays. My parents went on their 30th anniversary vacation about 6 weeks after their actual anniversary.
  • Actually....no. Mother's Day is always the second Sunday of May. May 10 is always May 10. There will be years that your anniversary falls on a Tues-Wed-Thurs the weekend after Mother's Day. If May starts on a Sunday, then Mother's Day would be May 8, making your anniversary a Tuesday.

This isn't as big a deal as you're making it out to be, but it clearly stresses you, so pick another day at the venue you like or pick another venue and see what they have available.

With my birthday being Mother's day (may 11th) I can tell you ALL about these dates. I will tell you, the last time my bday fell on Mother's day weekend was last year. The last time it was on Mother's day was when I was 19. Now I'm 24. It will be my bday this year for 25. It rotates every 6 years to falling on Mother's day.  But I enjoy it and I don't see an issue with having your wedding date on it. I really wanted ours to be right around the same time, but May wouldn't work well with FI's teaching job.
