Can't change my last name...(rant)

I got married on the 20th! It was amazing, even though the town I was too be married in got hit with massive flooding, and my venue was hit by a mudslide. So I had 4 days to find a new venue, florist, hair/mua and caterer. Well it all came together wonderfully! The venue we found was amazing, the food was great! We even saved a little money too.

And the honeymoon was amazing. If you haven't been to Napa Valley, you should put it on your list! Especially in the autumn.

I'm back home and looking to change my name, and the social security office is 2 hours away. So I'm on the phone trying to find the easiest way to do this, and was informed that because of the government shut down, they won't be doing that type of service right now. Wait a pain. I was really looking forward to getting all that taken care of before the holidays. Oh well!

Any of you other recently married ladies having this issue too?

  • Beautiful pics--congrats on pulling it all together despite those major obstacles!

Sucks about the name issue, but some people are going to actually be losing paychecks because of the gov't shutdown, so there are worse things.   I don't think most people expect you to have all the legalities with the name change worked out right away, so try not to worry about it.

Oh I know that it not the worse of what could be. I'm really bummed that any of the hard working citizens have to deal with the gov temper tantrums.
I'm not worried about the time it will take to do the name change, I'm just more of a motivated person who likes to get stuff done ASAP. Lol

And thanks! I was so lucky to have really awesome people working with me. And my wedding was on a Friday, so there were more options. Some brides are having to have their wedding dates changed to a week day. Or just finding a backyard. It's getting better though I hear.
  • Congrats!!  I'm glad you were able to find something that worked.  Did you use your friend's backyard??

We actually we able to find a venue. But our friends did open their home to us to host our rehearsal dinner last minute. Actually the hardest part was finding a hair stylist. Every salon in the are was booked. But there was a Facebook page started to get vendors and brides together to see who could help who.
  • Congratulations! I'm so happy you were able to pull it off. Love the pics!

After all you've been through, name change hassle seems pretty minor. Hang in there. I don't think there's anything wrong with using FI's last name during the holidays, like on cards and whatnot since you're planning to change it.

  • This will hopefully be a temporary delay. I feel bad for the couples that need to get their passports together for their overseas honeymoons! Or those who had honeymoons in National Parks that had to be canceled.

  • Congratulations! Your pictures are beautiful.

  • I got married on the 21st. I applied for my new card on Monday before the shutdown started, but since they aren't processing new cards at the moment, I don't know when I will actually get it.

It really hasn't been a problem at all, though. I was still able to get a new drivers license. Honestly, the biggest issue I have had with changing my name so far has been changing my email at work and my Outlook stopped working for a few hours.

I just wanted to give you kudos for the amount of grace you've shown through all of this - almost everything that could have gone wrong has, and you are a great example of the right way to handle it.  Congratulations :)

Thank you! I appreciate the support:) even though I didn't get to have the wedding I planned for 18 months, it was pretty dang close! But like we always say, at the end of the day you'll be married to your love and all will be great!! And boy, does it feel great to be married:):)

Oh, you were able to change your drivers license with just your marriage license? I might just go ahead and get that out of the way then. I though the SS card had to be changed first.

I actually had several people tell me I would need to change it first and I did take the receipt they gave me at the social security administration with me - but all they asked to see was my marriage license. I am not sure if that is something that changes by state, so maybe call the DMV in your area and see what they require. Good luck!

Also, I got my new card in the mail today! :)

Congratulations!! Where did you end up doing it?  I have several friends who were donating through that site and I know our venue picked up a couple of the displaced weddings.

We were able to to do it at the Dove house at the Lionsgate center in Lafayette. It was amazing and the people who run that place are awesome. And stayed at the double tree in Westminster. They had a free shuttle take us too and from the venue. It was great!

  • Congrats!! This sucks but keep trying. Hopefully our gov't will get this mess straight soon.
