Costa Del Sol, Spain

Hey all! My fiance and I are looking into doing a week at one of the Marriott  locations on the Costa Del Sol in Spain. Has anyone been there before? Any must-see places? Tips or tricks? I've read depending on the city in Spain, you can do a day trip to the Strait of Gibraltar and visit Morocco for the day, which sounds amazing.

Re: Costa Del Sol, Spain

  • Visiting Gibraltar itself would be a great day trip - there's a lot of do and see there.

You can also go across the straight itself, though that can be quite a bit for just a day trip in terms of the logistics. Unless you're staying somewhere that has ferries that run on a very frequent basis all day long, that's probably something that might be easier as an overnight trip.

Cádiz is a fantastic city on the other side of Gibraltar from the Costa del Sol - great beaches, a beautiful cathedral, etc. It's a very popular cruise ship port, though, so depending on what time of year you are there it might be a bit overwhelmed with tourists.

Málaga is, of course, the biggest city along the Costa del Sol (as well as where the main airport is), but I prefer the smaller coastal towns like Marbella (a very popular destination) or Puerto Banús.

  • I've been to Costa del Sol. Stayed in a nice hotel right in Torremolinos.  Beach across the street.  Tons of restaurants and shops within walking distance.  We did day trips to Morocco, Gibraltar and the Alhambra in Granada.  We even took the train to Seville for the day.  One of my favorite vacations!  If I can help any further, feel free to PM me.
  • Thanks to the both of you! We are considering both Malaga and Marbella (they both have Marriott time shares there, and our parents are graciously gifting us one of their timeshare weeks). I've been to northern Spain before (Barcelona, Pamplona, San Sebastien) but never so far south, so I'm totally out of my element. My fiance wants to be able to relax and have access to beaches, and I would like to take at least 2 or 3 days to explore the Straight/jump over to Morocco/experience some cultural things.
