I yelled at some kids

Yesterday I discovered 3 kids putting holes in the fence across the street from my house.

As soon as I opened my front door, two of them ran back to the park (next to my house).

The lone kid still had the piece of concrete in his hands.

Me: HEY!  Stop doing that!

Kid:  (shitting himself) I'm not doing anything!

Me:  I just watched you put those holes in that fence!

Kid:  I didn't do it! (still holding the concrete)

Me:  DROP IT!

Kid:  (dropping it) It wasn't us!

Me:  I just watched you!  Go back and play at the park!

Kid:  (running off)

I'm really surprised the kid listened to me.  I was really expecting a big "fvck you" and a middle finger.  But he ran off to get his friends and a few seconds later they took off on their bikes.  So far, I haven't had any parents at my door complaining that I yelled at their babies.  Son told me they are in his grade but he doesn't know them.

You can see the holes and the concrete to the right of the shadow on the sidewalk in the picture:

Honestly, I've been amazed at how well wee hoodlums respond to anyone who acts like an authority figure.
(although having a camera phone out sometimes helps.)

Is your neighbor pissed as hell?  I would be
  • The fence is actually owned by the city.  The fence separates the street from those peoples' back yards for about a block.
  • Kids can be such dicks sometimes.  Gah.

Good for you for saying something.

We watched that movie this weekend.  And yes, I was all sorts of "YEAH! YOU TELL HIM!" during that scene.
  • Ha!  I did see that one!
  • Yeah, you did right. They messed up that fence.

  • Good for you.  Little punks.
I've never had any problem reprimanding other people's kids, but ever since I became a parent - it's like I became empowered and I don't hold back.  I probably would have (stupidly) chased after the other kids.

I wanted to be all "LOOK HOW YOUR FRIENDS LEAVE YOU TO TAKE THE HEAT!  COWARDS!"  but I tried to remember that I was the adult in the situation.  :)
