so i got my ring a few years ago back in 2011 my fi had bought me this ring but the style of the ring and the insert it came with could not be sized up to my size 10 fingers according to the sales lady. so we had to return it, we selected another ring that i got to pick out. its a square cut princess halo style and when i saw it and tried it on i knew it was my ring, ring was a 6 1/2 and the sales lady assured me that this style ring could be sized up to your size 10 no problem. i get the ring in the shine it up a bit i take it home no problems at all with it fits great.  i get regular cleanings and inspections and the last time i went they said ring was fine..

i took it off the other day because i was working with chocolate and i did not want to get the ring all dirty. and i noticed on the band part that there was this scratch like thingy, i felt it and i am thinking omg my ring is going to fall apart. when we bought the ring i asked them since the ring is so small to start with will they add enough white gold to it so that the band is not thin?. because of the huge size difference, the sales person said its not a problem.

well i went sat night to the store, and the sales guy was like your ring needs to be re rodhumed (sp) and then i told him about the scratch.  they are sending it out.. i had heard bad things about beldens before and i  told my fi i would rather go to a local jeweler because you can get a really good ring and a good price. i said these chains are mass producing rings and they dont even know what grade the diamonds are.  but of course my fi like everyone else said to him go to the mall they have good rings..

  • Please post again with correct punctuation.  I just can't even with this nonsense.
  • It doesn't really sound like they've done anything wrong.  Are they fixing it at no charge?
  • I don't understand...Is there a question?  Or is this just a random FWP stream-of-(barely)conscious ramble?

Your ring is being repaired, no?  Is there a 'real' issue here?
  • yes its covered under my warrenty but i am just upset that after having my ring for that long it looks like it might crack in half
  • But it didn't fall apart and it's being repaired.

Move on and find something else inconsequential to worry about.
  • I have my grandmothers wedding ring, and about 2 months after having it cleaned/checked I lost the over 1 c diamond!  Now thats a woe, it can't be replaced because it was hers and its very old, you were actually lucky, no loss.
  • woe is us for trying to read this.

Re-rhodiumed. As in, re-plated with the rhodium coating that makes yellow gold look like white gold. This is normal and necessary. I just got my e-ring back today after being re-plated (I dropped it off Saturday, picked it up this morning). My ring is white gold, and when he bought it, FI was told he would have to make sure I got it re-plated regularly. Before I got it re-plated, it also looked like it had scratches on it. Today, it looks as good as new.

You're over-reacting over nothing. This is normal.

  • I'm surprised you were able to go over a year without having it re-plated. Most people I know have theirs done once a year because it begins to yellow.

My ring is through Kay's and they send their stuff out for 10 days, so lets hope you don't have to wait that long.

You feel naked now, but it will be back before you know it. Its normal wear and tear, and they can fix any scratch thats in the band.

My ring is white gold and in our extended care plan I need to take it in 2x per year to have it cleaned and re-plated in rhodium.  A ring is something that needs to be taken care of seriously, I recommend learning more about the ring you own and how to care for it properly, there may be something you don't know or don't realize that you are doing that may cause damage.

In response to your statement about "chain" jewelry stores, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a reputable business if you do your own research. There are many stores where you can pick out the diamond based on clarity, carat size, cut, and color.  If you don't do the research and just walk out with a ring based on the style, you run the risk of getting a lower quality product.  This is not the fault of the store.

  • Should've gone to Jared.
  • unless you're a professional hand model and walk around in gloves all day, your ring is going to exhibit signs of wear. If you plan to wear an engagement ring and wedding band together, you'll notice even more wear from the friction between the rings. white gold and platinum rings are plated in rhodium to enhance the silver-tone. depending on the amount of wear on your ring, you'll need to get the ring replated pretty frequently to maintain a "like new" look (I think 1-2x year is pretty typical). the wear to your ring will also depend on the karat rating of the gold. gold is a soft metal, and typically jewelry in the US will be an alloy of 10k, 14k, or 18k. 10k is the strongest because it has the least amount of gold - 24k gold is pure gold and very soft. If you compare wear on an 18k ring vs. a 10K ring subjected to the same conditions, the 18k will show much more wear.

as PP said, it's not a question of going to a chain jeweler, but doing your research and understanding the quality of what you're purchasing, having a good warranty/service plan, any potential problems with that style, and taking care of your investment.
