What is the best type of petticoat/crimolin for my wedding dress?

Hi!
I am looking for someone to point me in the direction of a good article outlining the rules for what to wear under the skirt of a wedding dress! I will be wearing a Maggie Sottero Monalisa Royale dress, and so far, my research tells me that I should wear a full length, hooped petticoat ( I want the skirt to be as big as possible!).  However, I am looking to buy a blue petticoat, and I'm having a hard time finding anything "hooped" and blue.  So I guess my confusion lies in:
What is the difference between crimolin and a petticoat?
Does it NEED to be hooped in order to be full? or are the layers what makes it fuller?
Aside from comfort level, is there any difference in the different materials used in petticoats (ie. organza vs tulle)?
Where is the best place to buy a petticoat? ( So far, I've found lots of Etsy shops that will make and dye one for you, and I'm leaning towards this option).

Thanks Knotters!

Adding layers of crinoline make skirts poof out and a hooped petticoat does make a skirt look really full, especially at the bottom.  ETA crinoline/tulle isn't as nice feeling against your skin as organza or something else might be.

  • Well with a hooped skirt you won't need massive amounts of layers to make the skirt look full. The sturdiness of the hoops will do that for you, however a hooped skirt will not give you the same look that you are going for underneath your dress.

I would say an organza petticoat will be more comfortable but a tulle petticoat may offer a bit more rigidity allowing your dress to really hold its shape.

Is there any way for you to go back to the store where you bought your dress and try on some petticoats?  Typically bridal salons will carry different types.  That way you can see what kind you like the most and what gives you the best shape that you are aiming for.

I personally don't suggest a hoop skirt because you have to take small steps in them to avoid looking silly and like you're buoyant. Some people like them thought. If you want it to be SUPER full, you can do more than one slip. Whoever does your alterations can sew one full petticoat into the dress and then you can wear another.

Odd, I wear a hoop skirt beneath some of my Ren Garb, and I don't have to take mincing steps, as the hoops hold the fabric far out from my body, causing a "bell" shape in my skirts.

I think she means that sometimes with hoop skirts when you move quickly the skirt of your dress can sway side to side and almost look like a ringing bell.  Not a look that everyone goes for.

Yep. A hoop skirt doesn't typically stay as stiff as layers of tulle will. But it's personal preference, I would just definitely suggest trying the hoop skirt and moving around in it in front of a mirror if that's what the OP decides.
