Wedding Woes

Finally have a birth story worthy of WW

Being released today, DH is dropping DD at school and then coming to the hospital, Brand New Colin is asleep in my arms, so this is a good time for the highlights:

DH was feeling under the weather Saturday and dragged himself through DD's swim class. We had promised to take her to the pumpkin farm, and I decided to ground DH and take DD solo, also hoping that the walking, wagon ride, etc. might kick start labor. Nope.

My induction was scheduled for 7:30 Monday morning, so we had planned a quiet day on Sunday. DH rested, DD and I baked Halloween cookies and cupcakes. My mom arrived that evening to look after DD while DH and I went to the hospital the next day. My mom only lives about an hour away, but she decided she'd rather not get up at the crack of dawn on Monday, thus the overnight stay. This turned out to be a very lucky thing.

I'd been having contractions on and off Sunday afternoon and evening, but they were mild and completely irregular, with no sign of getting serious. We set the alarm to get up for the induction and went to bed.

I woke up at 3:00 in the morning to 1) DH's annoying stuffy-nose snoring and 2) noticeably stronger contractions. I decided to start tracking them (I like the contraction tracking app called "full term"), and then all he'll broke loose in my uterus.

I actually didn't mean to make that a cliffhanger, but DH just texted and he's on his way up, so I'll pick this up later. To be continued and all that.

  • I have the Full Term app just waiting to be used.  I should go to the effing pumpkin farm, if that's what's going to get this show on the road!

  • Oooooh I'm so happy for you!
  • Isn't the app you need for your contractions just a clock?

It's basically a stopwatch that tells you the average duration and frequencey since your last contraction, the last hour, and 6 hours.   It's free and easier than writing all that shizz down.  I also have an app for frequency and types of dirty diapers and breastfeeding (which side, how long).

I would've LOVED an app to keep track of all that.  Dammit.
  • Better living through technology!

They told us to bring a watch with a secondhand to our birth class.  I was like, "um.. I bet there's an app for that.  We don't own any watches."

*looking around at the crazy people*

Poop tracking? There's an app for that!
Does it allow you to print out various charts and graphs to show trends in color and consistency - preferably in color so you can add some stickers and put them in the baby book?

You don't need a BF app if you watch TV during feedings - go to the 2nd commercial break in a 30 minute show, then switch sides and go to the first commercial break in the next show - that'll get you ~20 minutes/side.
  • I believe you can track consistancy and color?  I'm unsure of charts & graphs, but I could always make my own for the baby book :)

  • Barbie - if your baby has problems gaining weight, or is jaundiced or YOUR MILK WON"T COME IN BECAUSE YOU WERE INDUCED 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR DUE DATE (sorry, still traumatized by the whole experience) the pedi makes you keep track of every-damn-thing.  If I were in the situation again, I would say "no" - I'm not doing that.  But they scare the crap out of you when you're a first time parent.
They probably kept track of all that for Wolverine in the ICU.
  • i also had to track my pee.

  • @AuntFlo - I was induced 6 weeks before my due date. It took a good week for the milk to come in beyond colostrum or a couple of mL. I wasn't even allowed to try BF for a few minutes until she was a week old - and even then it wasn't a regular thing until they released her from the NICU at 12 days. It took her ~3 weeks to really catch on.

Wolverine had mild jaundice. I know  her weight and amount of food she ate was tracked in the NICU - i have no clue about the poop. she was always at the bottom of the weight curve, but i guess our pedi was fine with progression/development because we never had to track stuff.

i can see the usefulness of an app to track the stuff if there's an actual medical reason for it - but i can't imagine that it's a large percentage of people.

  • I had to track in the hospital with DS- no medical reason but damn if I forgot when the nurse or midwife came in to do their routine checks and had to remember it all. It was helpful when we got home to write it down. I'm shit for remembering that sort of thing and of course they ask you at pedi appointments how many wet/dry diapers, length of feelings etc if their healthy or not. I would have loved an app when he was born.
  • 1. Hmo, you of all people should know to post SPOILER ALERT. We'll get to table pooping. And how.

    2. We're tracking wet and poopy diapers until he regains his birth weight.

    3. The app is totally the way to go for contraction tracking, especially if you're not in the frame of mind to calculate things. And I sure as he'll wasn't.
  • Also, I am getting a little tired of hell posting as he'll.
