Crazyness. The things I learn at work

edited October 2013 in Chit Chat
I learned today that the pizza delivery people actually pay their own gas(At least around here they do). Isn't that terrible? I know I'll be tipping way more from now on.

  • The stores also charge a delivery fee.  Some of that money is paid to the drivers on their checks to compensate for the gas and wear and tear on their cars.  Part of my tip was for the convenience of the driver bringing me my dinner, part was for their cost of bringing me my dinner (worked at Pizza Hut as a cook, knew many drivers)  When the pizza companies started their deliver fees (75 cents) all of it went to the driver.  It was a way to cover a cost that they were already paying them by now having the customer pay it in a "fee."  That fee has slowly increased to present rates, $2.75 local.  I don't know any drivers today so I don't know if they get all of it, or a portion of it. But since I'm now being charged the cost of gas/wear and tear, I have reduced how much cash I give the driver.
  • My FI worked recently (within the last two years) as a driver and he got $1 for every delivery he made plus his tips and wage.

  • Many years ago, I worked at a pizza place.  We gave 25 cents per delivery to the driver for the wear and tear. This was when gas was about 1.25 per gallon!  I'm glad to hear that the wear and tear amount has gone up with the price of gas!

I always tip well, whether its dine in or delivery.  But some of those "delivery fees" do NOT go to the driver.  If you read the fine print on Dominos commercials or website, it spells out that the feel is not a tip to the driver.  So while they may get a portion of it for the "wear and tear" on their car, I doubt its the whole thing.

  • I've always wondered how this works. Interesting.
  • Some not all drivers have 2 pay scales. When they are in the physical building they get paid min. Wage. On delivery they get $2.13. Some get compensated a small amount for gas some do not.
