Destination Wedding and DIY- how are all of you ladies getting your cute projects/ideas to Vegas?

Hi Ladies,

I know so many of you have such cute and awesomely custom things you are doing for your wedding, but I am wondering how some of you gals are getting your décor/decorations/other items to Vegas from afar? Right now, I am stuck between wanting to do a lot of personal touches because I'd love to do that with struggling how to get those things to Vegas without the shipping costing a fortune or trying to bring with me on the plane (after all, I will have my dress and my 18 month old at that time!- OYE!)

Just curious what people did/are doing and is it as costly as I think it will be....

  • We had a friend that was driving so we gave her most of the stuff.

I made programs, TY sign, bouquets, boutinnieres, reception decor, thank you gifts for the guests, card box, cake topper, gift bags.

If she didn't drive it all would have fit into an extra suitcase and we would have checked it.

    What are you making?

  • We're driving to Vegas so we'll just take it with us!

  • Yeah I have friends in California but even with them driving, I still would have to ship stuff, which gets $$$

I was looking at making my own card box, décor for the ceremony (aisle pieces/backdrop), etc. and favors, but the more I think about it, being 2000 miles away puts a real damper on any DIY I might want to do.  A friend suggested that I go to Vegas a day early and just go get all my arts and crafts then and spend the day with some friends and family making stuff, but to me that is just cutting it too close...

  • I wouldn't make anything the day before you're going to be nervous about your big day don't want to add more pressure to you.

Do you have multiple people coming from where you live?  You could have them bring a DIY item and that could cut down on the shipping costs.  Also know that the majority of what you make isnt going to come back with you. I still think you can do it and you will save a ton of money in the end.

I made my 3 tiered card box before and then when we got to Vegas I put it together, so you could do that with your card box and we didn't bring it back, just the glitter letters and the cards (for the scrapbook, that 2 years later, still hasn't been made. lol). We also arrived the Wednesday before our Saturday wedding.

  • I had guests who were driving take my brooch bouquet to and from

  • I am flying southwest airlines.  They allow free checked baggage so we are going that route.
  • We had friends who where driving so we loaded up their car. There was a few items that we shipped directly to our wedding coordinator/catering manager.
  • I shipped out my dresses (wedding & bachelorette) for steaming, which made room for an extra checked bag.

If we bought something online, we shipped it to either the hotel (which was a pain to track down, but great for last-minute packages) or to family in California who were driving in.

We flew southwest and took all 4 checked bags, plus checked bags of family also flying southwest.

I got there and went, "Wait, where IS everything?" It's a pain, but it's doable.
  • Im shipping everything to my coordinator :-)

  • Well because iam coming from quite a distance as well....I wont be doing a lot of DIY projects, I have a few items iam doing, the rest (wedding decor) iam getting when i get to Vegas.   iam making my own favors/keepsakes.  Other than that we are keepin it as simple as possible, after all we chose to go away and get married and didnt want too much hassle...so we will be just bringing out items with us :)  Still not sure on shipping the wedding dress tho, every time i think of it i get very anxious!

  • I hear ya daisyygurl- I keep thinking, I should just ship it so I dont have to drag it through the airport security, the plane, more dragging from airport to hotel, etc. (Especially when I am going to have my 18 month year old in tow at the time, plus other luggage) but I get heartburn that it won't make it. Normally I would be like that stuff is a safe bet and if I overnight it and insure that should be fine, but FedEx has lost 2 packages of mine just this year from work and couldn't care less, so how can I trust them with a wedding dress!
  • yes definitely know what your sayin and when you have already have them lose two other packages thats even more frightening!  ahhhhhh i wish i could just be ok with it already! lol

  • We paid to check an extra suitcase that had all our decorations in it (tealight holders, floralytes, ribbon etc). After the wedding we threw out all the decorations and then put my wedding dress in the suitcase for the trip back. It was a hard-shell suitcase so everything made it there with no issues and my wedding dress, which has like a 6-foot train actually fit inside very well and that made the flight home much easier!
