Save the Dates

What is the correct etiquette of when you should send out a save the date for a destination wedding? We are getting married November 15, 2014 in Cancun at the Hard Rock. Some people have told me I need to send them a year out and others have said to send them out 10 months ahead of time. Any experience with this? Thanks!

Re: Save the Dates

  • I would say 8-10 months is good. At a year flight prices are just coming out and are high. But nothing wrong with a year
Out either totally up to you

  • I would go with 8 to 10 months.  That is what we did.  It gives people plenty of time

  • We're getting married in Mexico next September. We sent our STD's exactly a year in advance. This gives people PLENTY of time to save, make arrangements, plan work/vacation timing, logistics, etc.
  • I am getting married in Hawaii on November 14th 2014! Almost date twins! My Save the Dates are ordered and just noticed today on Vistaprint that they have been shipped! We are sending them a year in advance as we, and my family live in Australia and FI's family are in Canada.
  • We sent ours out at the 9 month mark.

  • We sent ours at the 12 month mark too. I guess it also depends on how far your families are travelling. Most of ours are travelling from Australia, Europe and Africa so Vegas is REALLY long haul for them.

  • We're at the ten month mark now and have started sending ours out this week! It seems like a good time, people have started asking for information and we've been able to make some serious deposits to ensure things will go ahead as planned :)

  • Thank you all for the feedback! Most of our guests will be traveling from Ohio to Cancun so I am going to go ahead and wait until after the holidays and send them out at the 10 month mark in January.
  • Im getting married in Key West next Sept 2014. Im sending out my save the dates in 3 weeks at the 10 months mark
  • When did you all send out your invitations then?
  • We sent ours at 6 months but on second thoughts with STDs going out I think we could have held off and sent invites at 2 - 3 months out.

  • Our invites were sent 2 months prior but we had a small guest list (all of who basically "RSVP-ed" when they received the STD) and though a destination wedding. the location is within a 3-5 hour drive of our guests (so no one was flying)
  • We're getting married in Riviera Maya at the Iberostar Grand Paraiso July 21st, 2014 and are planning to send out our STD's by the end of this week. Super excited!
We've talked about it we want to send our invitations out early January (7 1/2 months in advance) since all of our guests have to book their rooms by mid-February because of the special room block with lower rates we reserved. I feel that if we wait to send out the invitations in the Spring time they can seem pointless if everyone has already booked their trips by the time they receive the invitation. We have the website with all of the travel info on it so people can book in between the STD and the invitations.
