rehearsal dinner spot

We're coming in from Philly for our wedding, and need ideas for rehearsal dinner.  Would like a nicer spot.

Re: rehearsal dinner spot

  • What size party for the rehearsal dinner? Any particular area of Pittsburgh?
  • Our immdiate families + wedding party so approx 30.  Would like downtown area.

Downtown area places to consider: Sonoma Grille (wine themed), Six Penn Kitchen, McCormick & Schmicks (seafood), Lydia's (Italian), Ruth Chris steak, Morton's steak, NOLA on the Square (Cajun/creole), Hyde Park steak (across the river on the North Shore). I have checked into most of these places and these can accommodate larger parties your size.
  • We booked Six Penn for ours, but the downside is that if your rehearsal dinner count creeps up over 40 then they only offer buffet or family style instead of individually plated. We ended up going with them anyway because we wanted to open the space up for open bar welcome cocktails for out of town guests after, but it was kind of a bummer. The other benefit is that parking is better and the area around it is nicer than if you hit the Square.

  • Olive or Twist is a really chic place - it's right in the Cultural District, just a 2 minute walk from Heinz Hall & Six Penn.  It's advertised as a specialty cocktail bar, but they have excellent dinners and appetizers (and the cocktails are to die for, by the way).  It looks like a small place, and it sort of is, but there will be plenty of seating for your family & friends.  Downstairs has a long bar on one side, with small tables & chairs (bistro style) from the front to the back.  Upstairs is a little more chic - exposed brick, metal light fixtures, uplit bar, etc - it is also much more roomy!

  • We had ours at the Original Fish Market in the Westin hotel. I have nothing but great things to say about them! The food was delicious and it was extra accomodating because we had our room block there and everyone could just go right upstairs to bed after.
