Etiquette Woes with Brother-in-law

Hi Knotties,

I was married this past summer. My husband's brother was supposed to get married the weekend after us, but he kept breaking up with his fiancée. We put up with the drama all throughout our own engagement and they ended up never getting married. We haven't seen this girl in months, and now we are being told that she is coming to Thanksgiving dinner and that my brother in law and his girl have announced plans to once again get married this summer.

I have no idea how to deal with the impending awkwardness of the family dinner. Not to mention, his brother has not even officially told us any of this. Do I have to congratulate them again on their engagement, or do I just say nothing?

Unless the engagement was specifically brought up by either the brother or his FI, I wouldn't say anything.  If they make any announcement, the simplest thing to do is offer congratulations and ask to have the turkey passed.  I'm not really sure how or why the holiday would be awkward.  I would just carry on as a normal Thanksgiving Day.  If they start discussing wedding plans, I would just kick into "smile and nod" mode, and say as little as possible.
  • Sounds like a plan!

  • I would just say nothing about it, act civil and polite.
