I really like the idea of just saying "He did a wonderful job, didn't he?" or something to the like.  People are ridiculously rude.  What a terribly uncomfortable thing to ask.

I've had just the opposite problems from some of the other PPs.  I did pick my ring out myself- yes, totally and completely.  We both discussed the budget and then went shopping to find something I liked.  I hear all the time, "He did such a great job!", which makes me uncomfortable because it's not true.  I often say "he did a wonderful job letting me pick out my own ring", which usually makes people embarrassed.  

I have never commented on the size of a ring, or who picked it out- so rude.  "That's so beautiful!" or "I love it" are good responses when shown a ring.
