My fiance and I are looking for innexpensive outdoor wedding venues in the Pittsburgh area. Ideally we'd love to have our wedding at a barn-type setting, but so far all the ones we've looked at have been a bit expensive. We havent set a budget yet exactly, but I know that it will definitely be on the low end of things. We are likely paying for it ourselves with possibly (hopefully) a little bit of help from my dad (but it probably won't be much.) So right now we are just trying to get an idea of things. We're hoping to get married in October 2013.

One of the options we were considering was to have it at one of the Pittsburgh parks - like Schenley or Mellon. My fiance and I both grew up outsde of the city and honestly have never explored the parks in Pittsburgh much. So I was wondering, does anybody have suggestions on what parks in Pittsburgh would be best? Do any of the shelters have the setup to host the reception as well? Also, I've heard that theres a lottery of some sort to reserve a park or shelter - is anyone familiar with that process?

We are having ours at the Stone Pavillion in Washington Park (not Pitsburgh, but the pavilion is very pretty with two large stone fireplaces inside.  The most important parti is that there is electricity and a kitchen along with its own bathrooms.  It was only $350 to rent (and you get $100 back) and $50 for a liquor license for the day.

Be sure that the spaces you look at have electrical outlets and check the bathrooms.  Also check to see if you need a liquor license.

I've heard of people getting married at Robin Hill Park. I think it's in Moon. They have a house where you can host a reception but I'm not sure how many people it holds.

^ Yep, it's in Moon.  I had my graduation party there waaaay back in 2003.  Not sure if they've added a/c since then, but keep that in mind, even though you'll likely be ok in October!

A lot of brides on here have gotten married/looked into North Park as well.  I know they have a nice venue there.

Mellon park does not host receptions, only the ceremony. The Pittsburgh center for the arts, however, is right next door and is happy to be the reception venue. I would warn against this, as they are extremely difficult to work with and can be unwelcoming and cranky from personal experience. We've had exceptional luck with the parks in Franklin borough, and they have beautiful barns you can rent

Hartwood Acres is gorgeous but I think they have an early closing time.

We're getting married at the lodge at North Park. Currently, the cost is $300 (plus an extra $50 if you want to serve liquor). The building comes with outdoor space as well as indoor space. There's a large kitchen downstairs, and upstairs is nice. They have a balcony upstairs, a patio downstairs, a huge grassy area, and some kind of stage or raised platform in the back. 

There are long tables and chairs downstairs, but if you want to have seating upstairs or outside, you'd probably need rentals.

With the Allegheny parks, they don't reserve any earlier than a year to the day of the event. You can go up there to look at it anytime M-F usually between 9am and 3pm. Go to the office and ask for the key to look at it.

We are getting married at the West End Overlook in the West End/Elliot neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh. It is essentially the view from Mt. Washington, but further down the river so you actually see both sides of the point.

We rented the building to ensure no one will, but are not using it. We are only having our ceremony here, but depending on size you are allowed to tent it and host the reception.

The location is basically right above the West End Bridge.

The views are amazing! A lot of folks get wedding pics up here.
