David's Bridal Alterations...

My bridesmaid dress came in the mail yesterday for my best friend's wedding in October, and I need to get it altered.  It's from David's Bridal, and I heard SO many horror stories about their alterations being overpriced and them doing a poor job, etc. when I was on here a lot a couple years ago.

I'm torn though, since it's a David's dress, I'm wondering if I should go there, or just find a private seamstress...

Thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

Re: David's Bridal Alterations...

  • my sister's bridesmaid dresses were from david's, and i'll prolly get mine there too.

i hate david's bridal, to be honest - i think the dresses are really cookie cutter and boring.  but they usually have a very wide selection so it's just easier to get a bridesmaid dress there.  i'd never get my wedding dress there, though.

as far as alterations go - i ordered my dress a size bigger than the one i tried on in the store, since the samples are all very stretched - and just bit the bullet and did the alterations there.  are they overpriced?  probably.  but altering a bridesmaid or wedding dress is never cheap in the first place.

whether or not you'll have a bad experience is a crap shoot.  i've read lots of horror stories online about the service at david's - but where i live, in fargo, it's not that bad.  their seamstresses weren't exactly perky or friendly - but for god's sake, they sit in a back room all day and sew.  i forgive them if they don't want to treat me like the sun shines out of my ass.  the alterations they did for my sister's bridesmaid dresses were just fine.

if you can part with the cash - just save the time looking for someone else who does quality work and do the alterations at david's.
  • I just did the alterations through David's.  The way I saw it, if they completely and royally screwed up, they could just replace the dress and start again.  It wasn't horrifically overpriced ($40 for an under bustle, $90 to take in the bust), and since I didn't need much, it wasn't worth the time and effort to try to shop around.

David's is a chain, so service will vary.  I've been to numerous David's locations in my area, some are stellar and some are less so.  It will be better for you to try to find reviews of the specific locations you're considering if you're worried.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • How much do you need done?  If you will drastically be changing the dress I would probably go there.  As others said they could replace it if its bad.  But as they have told my girls (which I'm sure is just a line), they alter these dresses so many times they know exactly how to do it.  I know at least one of my BMs is getting hers done there and said the ladies were really nice to her.  But all David's do vary.

  • I was in a friends wedding last year. We got our bridesmaid dresses from Davids Bridal. All I needed was a hem and they quoted me at about $100. I went to someone in my town and it cost me $20. It really depends on how much of the dress you need altered. If your comfortable going to someone else to get it done then go for it, it may be cheaper (may not be). But like the others said, if DB screws it up they can replace it.
