Vacation Rental as as Wedding Venue - thoughts?

We've decided that we definitely are going to have our ceremony & reception in San Diego, CA and not in Chicago (where we reside).  I began looking at vacation rentals out there that can accomodate up to 40 guests and I've found some beautiful ones.  The one we are looking at is in Valley Center, CA and it's called "Rancho Magdalena" (http://ranchomagdalena-ca.com/).  It's perfect for our guests, offers a wealth of outdoor/indoor activities, and is within our budget.

Has anyone ever had or been to a wedding ceremony/reception at a vacation rental?  I suppose it would be similar to having your wedding at a friend/family member's house if it was big enough to fit everyone.

Just looking for thoughts on this...  Thanks!

Um, I have no real-life relevant advice.

Try the CA board, and try the destination weddings board.

Oh I remember you from a few months ago.

If you are still not engaged I have no advice for you. Figure it out when you are engaged.

One of my friends did this a few years ago, though I wasn't able to go to the wedding.  It's also an idea we're now tossing around as my BF seems very interested in the idea of a destination wedding in Costa Rica.

Basically, most houses rent for the week.  So you have to figure out who would be staying there that week - do you want both bride & groom's family, or just one of them?  Who is paying for it?  Do the people who stay there pitch in, as if they were staying in a hotel room, or is it hosted?  Where would other people stay?

ETA: Apparently your place rents for just weddings, not the whole week, so that wouldn't be a concern.

It would be like having it at a private home - you'd have to hire vendors to do just about everything, or DIY.

That sounds lovely, if you're engaged. Are you engaged?

I always have to use the magnifying glass, but I'm usually too lazy. Too many just blur together...

I think a vacation rental would be similar to a DW/house wedding but I have no advice on that. A DoC would be nice though.

Well, the one you linked to is apparently intended for weddings, but if you look at other rental properties, you absolutely need to make sure you'll be allowed to have a wedding there. Many vacation rentals do not allow it, AFAIK.

    A) You're not engaged.  Stop researching.  There is no need.

    B) I hope you are aware that that venue is not actually IN San Diego.  You will NOT be near the ocean.  It is inland.

When planning a wedding at a vacation rental, I think it's important to confirm your intended guest list first - if the rental can only hold 40, you can only have 40 guests or less.  Given that my mom's side of the family is more than 40, that wouldn't work for my family.

I think it's a cool idea, though.  I would make sure that all my "must be there" people were able to go/afford to go to San Diego, as I imagine most of them are from out of town.

Obviously, I'm not an ideal candidate for a destination wedding :)  But I'm kinda jealous of people that are, haha.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

I'm sure I would be amused by it, but YouTube is blocked at work, so I have no idea what it is.
