Jewelry repair

The centre stone in my ring from Christmas is loose. I can hear it click a bit when I move my hand, and if I try, I can feel it move. BF didn't buy insurance for it from the store he bought it at (a chain store), so I'll likely have to pay to get it fixed. Should I take it back to that chain store, where I know they don't have a jeweller on site and have them send it away without knowing what's wrong with it, or should I take it to a local jeweller my family knows who might be able to tell me what needs to be done and cost on the spot?

You really want to avoid "mail out" jewelers with valuables. I would go to a local jeweler that does everything in-house. If you had insurance that covered everything, that would be a different story, but since you don't I would go to someone you trust. Re-setting the diamond should not be that expensive since nothing is broken and no stones have been lost.

    Good luck!

Go to a jeweler you know.  Be present while he fixes the ring if you can.  Make sure it's secure before you take it back...and insure your ring!

If he JUST bought it at Christmas and it's already loose, are you sure the chain store can't fix it? I mean, yeah, you didn't buy insurrance, but that's pretty crappy that it broke already.

Bourgehm, that's what I'm wondering, but I'm not sure. I mean, it's not totally 'broken', but the stone is definitely loose. I'm concerned that it might just be that the style of setting isn't particularly secure.

Maybe go ask the chain jeweler ladies/gentlemen if there's anything they can do if not take it to the friend.  I'd rather a friend deal with my valuables then a chain store that has to mail it away.  BUT since it's not very old they may be able to help you at the chain.
