Gifts......

Hi!  So I'm not sure which is the most polite option.  We registered at three locations early due to everyone asking us where we were registered.  We had two engagement parties and have received a ton of what was on our registries.  I know I'm having at least one bridal shower and there are some things left for that and I think almost all price points are covered but there is certainly not double the number of gifts to number of guests.  Should we register for more things....though we don't really want anything else?  I know the polite thing is to make sure you have a lot of options on the registry for guests (if they want to buy you a gift) have choices.  Thanks guys!

Do you get cash for wedding presents in your area?  If the only event left is your shower, then I'd think you're okay.

  • Double the number of gifts? That's likely some dumb rule that the industry made up to encourage more gift-pushing. If you've registered for everything you need, just leave it. Or, are there things you can upgrade? Like if you have a blender, so you didn't register for one original, you could now and put something nicer on the list. Did you register for fun things? Like board games, outdoor gear, etc? Those were some of the first items to come off our list, and our guests who bought them thought it was cool that we registered for things for enertaining other than platters and glassware.

  • i think it's difficult to find a balance.

M had 5 showers because of divorced parents and an out of town wedding.

The registries were bought out before the wedding so they got a ton of cash.  As i stated in the post below, they got a shiiitload of Tiffany crystal.  Anything no engraved was returned for store credit.

The family got a ton of Tiffany key chains that year!
  • Did you register at Wm. Sonoma?

Go wild there, i could easily

Yes I'd say a majority of people give cash gifts (I always give some form of cash gifts for a wedding even if I give a physical gift); however, I just didn't want to make it weird for people if there was very little left on the registries.
  • I'm also a fan of registry stalking.  This way you know what's going on as your showers approach and can add things if necessary.

Maybe up the numbers of requested items you're already registered for?  I mean really, is there such a thing as too many great towels or high count sheets?  Or add little things you don't necessarily WANT but could certainly use, like a nice can opener or martini glasses?

I'm a big fan of options when I go to registry shop.  I HATE getting the print out and only seeing one or two things left in my price point.  That takes all the fun out of deciding.  So if yours is quickly crossing out, I think you should consider adding to it just a little.  You could always return items later if it turns out some of the things you added you truely just had NO purpose for.

Okay =) That makes me feel soooo much better.  I just hear of all these rude horror stories and I don't want to make any mistakes!  I'm a major shopper.....so we have most things upgraded already.  We are board game dorks.....we have a collection already!  Funny though that you mentioned that.  Overall I'd prefer cash if things are purchased off the registries.....but again I just wanted to make sure people had choices.

LOL I love Tiffany's crystal though didn't register there because half of the guests aren't anywhere near a Tiffanys.  We're registered at Macys, BBB and WIlliams Sonoma.  I LOVE WS and could easily register for everything in sight but I already have so much stuff from there that I'm trying to not register to have things I don't need or really want.  Do you ever buy their themed bunt pans?? I have like 10....love them.

I'm addicted to registry stalking.  My mother thinks I'm crazy like it's somehow ruining the surprise (its not like I know who bought the presents!).  My wedding isn't until Jan so it's just been a little disconcerting (in a very happy way of course I'm grateful for everyone's generosity).
  • I have enough items scattered through my 3 registries for everyone to purchase a gift. I found it hard to think of enough stuff to register for. Honestly I would love a dyson vacuum, but I know no one would buy it, and 2 our vacuum we have works fine. I all in all hate registries because they get your hopes up, and they encourage pie in the sky consumerism. I would never buy 70% of the stuff on our registries because they are outrageously expensive, and I could live without 90 percent of it. I do need new pots and pans though...

oOo and I HAVE TO HAVE a kitchenaid stand mixer..
and a panini maker!!! Oh, I'll add that right now...

    I kid I kid.

  • We are registered at 2 places, Macy's and Bed, Bath & Beyond. I know there are "rules of thumb" out there, but we just registered for what we want and need. I feel like there is enough stuff to choose from for all our guests and their price ranges, and that is what mattered to me. A lot of my family and friends said they may also just do money or gift cards, which is totally cool with me.

I'm surprised you received everything from your engagement parties since etiquette is typically "no gifts" for those.
I would register for more things, however I would make sure they were under the $100 range if the same people who gave you gifts for your engagement party are going to be invited to your shower.
