Married Ladies...

What did/are you planning on doing with you wedding dresses???

I am getting it cleaned, but not sure where to go from there.

Also just got back our marriage license, and ready to start the name changing process. I know I have to start with the social security card. I saw a form online, but Do I need to go into the office regardless, or can everything be mailed in?

All help is appreciated!

Re: Married Ladies...

  • I cleaned it and saved it. It is sitting in a box at my mother's house and probably will stay in that box for the rest of my life. I just don't want to part with it for sentimental reasons. I am also that dreamy delusional type that likes to imagine my daughter will wear it one day. Yeah right.

You could always donate it to charity which I have thought about doing on more than one occasion.

I think you can mail the stuff in, but I didn't. I don't trust them not to lose the originals of all my documents.

[QUOTE]You can mail it in if you choose. I'm going tomorrow to do mine. If you go in and have all of your paperwork ready, I hear it only takes a few minutes. I plan to get my dress preserved and then let my daughters, FDILs, nieces, granddaughters, whatever have at it to do with it what they want.

Yes and no. I went FOUR time to three different offices. The first three time I waited over two hours each (one time four plus hours) and really could not wait any longer for them to get their shiit together. The fourth time I waltzed in, they took me within three minutes and I was done. It was the oddest thing ever.
  • Jess- What goes into preserving the dress?

I was hoping to not have to go into the office & take time off work but I guess that would be smarter then mailing everything in and giving them my passport and marriage license. If you go into the office you get your card right there on the spot or it comes in the mail in a couple of weeks? As long as they don't keep my documents.
  • I went to SS because I didn't trust sending our original marriage certificate in the mail. We were told that the original was not replaceable which really meant that they could give us certified copies but there is only one original.

My dress is still sitting on an extra bed upstairs in a bag. It is so dirty from dragging on the ground on our wedding day. I would have it professionally cleaned but I really don't want to keep it and if I sell, it will probably cost more to clean that I would get by selling it. I think I'm going to try to clean it on my own and if I'm successful, I'll find a place to donate it where it will go to someone who can't afford to buy a dress. If I ruin the dress, I'll probably have it cut into a shorter dress and may keep it. It is ivory so I can probably get away with wearing it somewhere someday.

  • Meaghan- I didn't realize there could be more then one office....I guess another thing I will have to look into. I could figure out which office would be less hectic.
  • I have no idea! I just know that places like DB do it for around $100.

Your card will come in in a few weeks once you submit your application. I'm going tomorrow, so I can let you know what happens for me.
  • They send the new card in the mail.

I would suggest getting there about 30 minutes before the office opens in the morning.
  • You have to wait for them to mail the replacement card to you.

  • I haven't gotten my dress cleaned yet, but that is the plan. I want to keep it, I hope that someone I know wears the dress someday. I love, love, love my dress and hope to share it with someone I know (a future daughter, a friend).

I would go to one where the population is not so high. I am convinced the first few times I just made the mistake of going into SS offices in fairly large cities.
  • Julez, if you sell your dress, I'll buy it. I have nowhere to wear it but I like it. I would prance around my house in it.

  • Fi wants me to save the dress for our kids. so it will be cleaned and preserved.
  • Julez, to jump onto the julez's wedding crush train, if I were to do it all over again and chose a JOP wedding, I would want to basically recreate your wedding day.

Haha! I think GG is actually first in line. I've tried to find things to wear it to and I just haven't yet. We might do a TTD, though so at least I'd get to wear it then.
  • Damn that GG! I'll get her! If its the last thing I do! *shakes fist*

I got mine professionally cleaned and preserved. It's sitting in a box in my closet for now.

  • I would love to do a TTD session....I did not get married in the city I live...maybe I should look into someone who isn't too expensive.

  • Mine is currently in a pile near the closet... but I plan to clean it to get all the dirt off the bottom, and then I'll keep it in my closet forever, trying it on every now and then when I'm feeling sentimental (and skinny)!

  • Looks like I will have to go into the office with my form filled out and all documents....thanks for the tips ladies!

Jess lets us how your visit goes tomorrow
  • I did a TTD, got it cleaned, and now it's preserved. I guess it's just going to sit there until I figure out something else to do with it.

As for the SS, I went in a little early, and was in and out in about 10 minutes.

  • My SS office gave me a print out that I could take the BMV so I didn't have to wait for the actual SS card before going in and getting new driver's license. I just had to wait 24 hours, then take the printout from the SS office with my marriage certificate and ID and was able to get a new driver's license that day. Then I just started calling all of my credit cards, student loans, cell phone, car insurance, etc and asked what they need. Some did it right over the phone and others had me fax the marriage certificate. The bank was the only one that had me personally come in with the paperwork.

  • mine is in the garment bag which is stuffed into a rubbermaid tote up in our attic.

i only paid $300 for it. they wanted $200 to clean it and "preserve" it. i didnt want to pay that. i also dont want to sell it, since i'd probably get maybe $100 and i dont want to part with it for just $100.

my plan is if we have a kid to have my MIL hack it up for a christening outfit. if we have a girl, she can wear the veil for her first communion. if we dont have a kid, i'll probably just donate it.

FWIW, everyone said the dress would yellow wtih time. My sister's gown is 16 years old and has not yet yellowed. my mom's wedding dress did yellow after nearly 50 years. i found a drycleaner who did an amazing job with it and got nearly 90% of the yellowing out. i dont think the cleaning and preservation gimmicks are worth it.
  • I think mine was the only different case out there... I got to the SS office, was seen in under 10 minutes, only to be told I had to go to the DMV first because my license showed nothing with my new name on it (I knew this; it's one of the things Clark County/Las Vegas says on their website - they don't do the "name change"). So, I had to go to the DMV, file an affadavit saying what I was changing my name to, get my new license, and then go back to the SS office, where I had to wait probably 30 minutes. Then they didn't read the license correctly, and used my former middle name, and either I didn't read the proof or I didn't get one, so the one I got was incorrect, and I had to go back again 2 weeks later.None of the visits took longer than an hour, and it was the only game in town. I've sat in a SS office for a couple hours before, to file divorce papers, so I know that happens.

As for my dress, it's in my spare bedroom, and I'm keeping it. It's a cocktail dress, and if my dad does a "dress up" party for his retirement this fall, I'm wearing it (with the jacket).
