Second Weddings

First Fitting

Ladies,

I rarely share photos but here it goes....

This was my first fitting.  The only thing that needs to be adjusted are the shoulders and a bustle hem put in.  I was going to have the chapel train removed, but at the fitting my daughter told me she wants my gown for her wedding, and to keep it.  Needless to say, I was a bit emotional from that point on.

Did anyone else have that warm and fuzzy feeling at their fitting?  I've had issues with my dress, but the more I see it, the more I love how I feel in it.

Let's see those wedding dress pictures and tell me what was the factor in chosing your dress?  I picked my dress based on price and that my son and daughter had the "wow" factor when I exited the dressing room.

That looks beautiful on you!  I'm so glad you had a good fitting experience and that your daughter felt so strongly about the gown.  How nice for both of you!

With my gown - it was all about it feeling like "me."  Black detailing was a must and I was pretty set on a Maggie Sottero from the beginning, so it all worked out amazingly well.  Below is a photo from both my final fitting and the wedding (Oct. 10).  The wedding day had far more cleavage, due to a last minute undergarment change, but we all just had a good laugh about it - and my husband loved it.

Final Fitting - (I designed the sleeves and had them added by my seamstress)

arv266, I love that gown and it looks fabulous on you!! I'm glad you had a wonderful first fitting. How wonderful for you that your daughter wants to use your gown when she marries! Yay!!

I won't have my first fitting until early January.  My gown is James Clifford Collection J21027 (long story at how we arrived at that), and I am hopeful that it will come in the way it was ordered.  It's being shipped directly to me as the salon that I was assigned is closing this week, which makes me a little sad to know.  I did get goosebumps when trying on the sample.

Melissa - I love how you rocked your dress and completely made it your own!  Your black gloves were a perfect choice!  Since my gown is fairly simple I'm going with BIG bling from my ears to my toes.  Of all the things that I love about my dress it is the waist - and how slimming it makes me look.  No small feat after two kids!   What I need is super doooper push up bra to help bring the girls UP a bit!

Angie - I love, love, LOVE your dress.  I am sending good vibes that the dress arrives on time and that its even more beautiful than you remember!

I think we are dress twins! or at the least very similar dresses. I chose it mostly due to price and like you, the way that it feels on. And it makes my girls look awesome and my waist tiny!

You look amazing in it. Glad the fitings are going well.

Gorgeous! So glad your first fitting went so well!

Sadly my first fitting did not go as well. I took my 83yr old mother because I thought it would be really nice to have her there and that she could enjoy the experience with me. Well when you have an older parent beware!! She cried about my deceased (gone 4yrs) father almost all the way to the bridal salon. I had to tell her that I wanted to be happy today so she needed to stop talking about him if she was just going to cry. I felt mean but it had to be done.

At the salon when she saw my dress for the first time she said "oh so much lace". Ah yeah that's one of the reasons I loved it. I could so tell she wasn't into it. I started having doubts myself. I then asked her after I took it off what she thought.
And she said with this hopeful tone in her voice "why did you have something elsein mind?" No this is it! This is my dress!

Suffice it to say no matter what your age you want your mothers approval lol.
Guess I didn't get it. Now I have a second fitting next week and I am nervous as all get out because I so afraid the love for my dress has evaporated with my mothers comments.

Oh Msblu!   So sorry that your first fitting didn't go smoothly!  You focused on your mom's comments, but tell me, how did the dress fit?  How did you feel in it?  My daughter is 12 and frequently watch "say yes to the dress" together and inevitably there is always an episode with a bubble bursting mom.   I told my daughter that I fear being that "mom" and when the time comes, for her to stick to her guns.   Mom's have...opinions...  Just an opinion, not a fact or law.  As much as you wanted her to love your dress as much as you do, its perfectly okay if she doesnt.

Do you have any photos?   Show US your dress!

You look FABULOUS in that dress! I know what you mean about loving how a dress makes certain body parts look better!

My dress(es) are in my bio, link below, under attire, page down. Around the same time I found one dress at a sample sale locally, I got some really cheap silk dipioni with pearls sewn on it ($5 a yard!), and since I've sewn for over 40 years (sssshhhh on the age), had to make my "dream" dress.

Sadly, my daughter is already 6 inches taller than I am, and bigger boned, so she can't wear the one I'm making. If it's going to be an heirloom, I'll have to hope for petite granddaughters some day, LOL.

    Congrats on finding "the one".

Sue, your dresses and your bio are BEAUTIFUL!   How far along are you with your dress?  I am going to officially hound people until I get some photo sharing!!!!!

At 12 my daughter is already 4 inches taller, but I see that as a small miracle.  Or in her case, a tall miracle!  I was flattered that she liked the style and more than that, she gets it.  She gets how happy I am, and how much my FI does for our family.  Oh great... I've made myself weepy all over again!

Arv - dress looks beautimous on you!

MsB - I had the same reaction with my mom to the original dress I picked.  Sadly, H had the same reaction :(  I really, really wish I would have stuck to my original choice tho.  H was okay with the choice; it just seemed too fancy for our reception.  And it would have been, but dammit I was the bride LOL!
  • edited December 2011
Arv when I first put my dress on I absolutely loved it! I  saw the dress online Davids Bridal and knew at that time that it would be my dress. It is a lace trumpet with bow that ties sweetly in the back.

I tryed on 3 other dresses when I went to the store and that dress is the one that really made me feel like a bride. My 27yr old daughter was with me and loved it on me as well. She even wished she had tried that style of dress when she got married the year before. I was so excited when I left the store that day.

Fast forward 7months with my mother and well you all know the story lol. The thiing is though the dress fits my body shape perfectly. It fits my venue which is an older building built in 1923. It fits our reception which is just a cocktail reception without being over the top.

I love the lace! Its what I wanted. My mother I think was imagining more of a bridal ball gown or something; She told my aunt ,told to me by my sister, that I still haven't changed. When I picked out my first communion dress it was'nt poofy like the other girls. Even then I guess I liked just slim lines. So I guess that is what she is hung up on.  I know I just have to go with my gut and not worry about it. Too late anyways!I am getting married in three weeks and 2 days!!

Thank you, Lisa.   It's not easy finding a non strapless wedding gown! Have you gone shopping for dresses?  What styles are you looking at?
