Bridesmaid dresses matching Wedding gown

What is the rule on matching the bridesmaids dress to my wedding dress. Do I have to match the fabric type and style? My dress is a satin Kenneth Pool and the bridesmaids dress I originally liked was more of a layered organza, and now I'm not sure if it will look odd.

    2) I didn't match my BM's to my dress at all.  It didn't look weird.  Actually, I tried really hard to get the girls to find a dress that they liked and would wear again, but they didn't want to.

    I think with satin, you can pretty much get away with anything for bridesmaid dresses. The only thing to keep in mind is matching relatively with formality of your dress. My dress is chiffon, so my only stipulation to the bridesmaid was no satin or shiny material, because it did look strange against my very matte and soft fabric.
