WHAT is your dress budget

Re: WHAT is your dress budget

  • My budget was $2000 but I fell in love with one on clearance and paid about $450 and it fit perfectly so the only alterations I got was putting in a bustle which the woman only charged me $20 for. The dress was originally $1300.

I originally thought I would spend $800 or so, but...HA! There is just nothing special enough out there for that cost. The wedding business is a racket. Once you accept that, you can go on. Anyway, I am getting married in 30 days and really couldn't be happier with my dress. The retail was about $3600 but I bought the sample for $2300 (+ $200 tax) and then the alterations were $327. Admittedly, this was not cheap but I could afford it and I wanted something unique that combined a classic feel and modernity. I'm not going to wear a veil but spent $115 on tulle flower combs. I don't think the dress should be based on what you can spend, but rather, what your personal style is.
  • $1000 pre alterations.. I ended up finding a Maggie for $800!

My buddget was $800 or less.  Originally I was having a hard time trying to find what I wanted in my price range.  I fell in love with a casablanca dress and a maggie sottero dress which both looked the same and had rosettes with feathers.  Both of those dresses were out of my price range so I kept looking and found a P.C. Mary's dress that was almost identical without the feathers for $625 and $700 with tax.  Because it has a lace up back there will be less alterations.  I will just have a basic, easy bussle, have the bottom hemmed, and then have the feathers added to the rosettes.  I believe that will only cost me $100 so I am right at my budget.

The store that sold me my dress told me something I love to pass onto other brides.  The owner told me that if you find a dress you love but out of your price range, often time if you wait an additional season, you can find the same dress with a few minor changes from another designer for a cheaper price.  So if you see something you like but do not want to spend that much, keep looking.  Also, once I found a style I wanted, I searched google typing in the key features of the dress and searching pictures.  That is how I found the dress I ended up buying.

    I hope that helps!
  • I paid a little over $5,000 for a Reem Acra dress. I used to walk by her salon every day on my way to work and drool when I lived in NYC before law school, so I was pretty sure I at least wanted to try on her gowns. I was planning on buying it myself but my mom surprised me with it.

My budget was $1500 including alterations, and I am going to be pretty damn close to that ($1100 dress, taxes, $250ish in alterations).
  • Mine was $1200. My dress came about $400 under budget. After alterations with shoes, headpiece, and veil included it will all come to about $1300.

  • My mental budget was $1000 (which already made me hyperventilate, because I just couldn't imagine that much for a dress for a day) - went to Alfred Angelo with my mom just to get an idea of what kind of dress I might like, and fell into the perfect one! On sale for $700 and a veil also on sale for $75 - not counting accessories or underthings - all jewelry are pieces my FI has given me throughout our relationship and underthings are meant to be worn again (and they're cute! :) ), shoes were $30 on clearance at DSW, $10 in fresh flowers to go with the veil as my headpiece. Haven't gotten the alterations yet, but I felt so good about our group project (and spending) that I bought a second reception/party dress at Alfred A. on sale for $175, that I'll also take on our honeymoon...so where does that leave us? Yeah, I guess we're around $1000, maybe a bit over.

Mostly I just feel good that my parents, my FI, and I all contributed to the ensemble according to what we could afford - just like we've approached the rest of the wedding. Everyone throws in what they can and we all tackle it together as a team. Just a really cool feeling, so I don't really worry about the budget at all :)
  • Mine was $1500 (my dress was slightly below that), but is because I have a family friend who is a great seamstress and I'm not having to pay for alterations and my something borrowed is my sister's veil.
