NWR Poll - OCD behavior

For a nice break in the week, I would like to poll the board.

What's your OCD-like habit that you do?

After my shower, I take time to line up all my morning ritual products. Cleanser, toner, eye cream, deoderant, moisturizer, and then body lotion. Then, when I'm done, I put them away in that exact same order!

OMG! I do this too! I take everything out of the medicine cabinet that I need to use and put them back as I use them. Same with my make up out of my make up bag! I try to tell myself its so I don't forget anything.

I also need all my bills to face the same way in my wallet, the dishwasher has to be loaded a specific way, all my hangers/shirts/pants have to face the same way in my closet, the dog's toys have to be put away in their basket when he is done playing, and about a million others.

I'm OCD in the kitchen about using raw meats and rinsing foods (fruit, veggies etc.), can't let them get anywhere near each other and rinsing the knife to use on something else is not sufficient. Same as handling raw meat and then just rinsing your hands off without using soap. - I mention this because I've seen quite a few people do this... way to spread salmonella onto the dish towel!

I'm also OCD about washing my hands/using hand sanitizer when in public areas or just cooking at my house, my hands are often chapped/dry because of it.

This is totally me. I use bleach to clean up after cleaning meat and then all the crap I use go into the dishwasher. I also wash my hands with lysol and soap . The smell of meat on my hands makes me feel like puking.

I'm with Julie on the dishwasher.

I have this weird habit of checking to make sure my front door is locked, and whether or not the garage door closed- I will turn around and double back to check sometimes.
  • edited December 2011

I check and double check all doors to make sure they are lock, even after I just lock them. When I'm in the car, even if I see that the lock is on, I have to hit it again to make sure. lol

The counters have to be cleaned off in our LR and kitchen. FI likes to pile up things - bills, magazines - drives me insane. And I have OCD with making sure that things are unplugged before I leave the house, I'll check the plug 5/6 times before I leave (and then still wonder). I also check my alarm clock numerous times before bed to make sure it's set correctly.

I also have *issues* with meat, and I take forever trimming the fat off. I don't like the idea of animal fat.

Whenever I eat a hamburger I never finish the last bite. Can't do it. Crazy person.

Haha I'm sure I have more since I'm such a weirdo, but they're probably so routine I don't even realize it.

Hmmm, I can't really think of anything. I'm pretty blase about most things, my house is always cluttered and like FI says "just enjoy the mess". LOL, he has definitely brought down my standards. I just can't keep up with the papers from school and wedding and everyday life - so my desk looks like it exploded all over the living room. And our bedroom has clothes everywhere. But we do our dishes and stuff - our kitchen is probably the cleanest room in the house.

I practice food safety in the kitchen, but after years of working in the food service industry and taking food safety classes its more of second nature than a thought out process. I don't really consider that OCD as much as being safe. Foodborne illness is not fun.

I am also OCD about a lot of things, but probably my biggest one is my clothes. Like others have said, I MUST have all the clothes facing the same way in the closet. I also organize the closet by type of clothing (all pants, shirts, tank tops, etc. together). I can't stand wrinkles in my clothes, so I am really careful about how I fold my clothes and put them away in my drawers. Probably the strangest is how I do laundry, because I'm paranoid about shrinking my clothes, so just about everything goes on the drying rack instead of in the dryer. Sweaters even go on a special sweater drying rack. It takes me FOREVER to do laundry! And I'm sure I'll never let FI do my laundry because I know he'll do it wrong.

Ha! I do this too in order to avoid shrinkage, but it's more of a "I don't want shirts clinging to my gut" thing. FI is not allowed to do my laundry, either. He throws everything in the dryer and bakes it.

OMG! I have so many. I get annoyed when people offer me food while touching it or trying to hand it to me in their own hand.I will not eat my food if people talk over my food.I constantly wash my hands and I make my son and my FI wash there hands after everything.I hate HAIR! I cannot see it my bathroom. I sweep and vacuum my bathroom everyday.I used to take shower with shower shoes on, but I have been cured of that issue.I bleach everything, even though they say it’s not healthy.I use sanitizer after grocery shopping and having my hands on the cart.I use ponds on my face twice a day. I cannot live without PONDS.I use chap stick like crazy! Used to be addicted to CARMAX until I found out it strips your lips really badly.

OK, don't even get me started on my laundry habits.

The top of my closet is shirts and the bottom is pants. The left side is casual and the right side is dressy/work clothes. So on the left hand side, I have my jeans hanging below, and shirts on top arranged by type of shirt -- short sleeved, 3/4 sleeved, long sleeved, sweaters, etc. The right side has my work pants on bottoms and shirts on top arranged my layering tanks, short sleeved, sweaters, etc. Sometimes something falls in multiple categories so I have to make a judgement call. And since I've moved in with Andy, my closet space has shrunk so I have to use the cedar closet in the basement to store seasonal clothes which complicates things!!!

And I'm completely the same way about doing laundry itself. We have a big laundry room in our basement and I have 6 baskets that are:

Darks that can be dried all the way

Darks that CAN'T be dries all the way

Lights that can be dried all the way

Lights that CAN'T be dries all the way

Whites

Towels, sheets, etc.

Every couple days I take my laundry basket from our room and sort accordingly. And I do laundry as needed. Its quite a process.

Oh man...I'm kinda an organizational freak. I have calmed down in recent years, but still things HAVE to be in their right place, like makeup, cupboards, closets. If the bowls are where the plates go or something I have a mini panic attack. My makeup gets put back in the same spot every time. Also, my clothes are organized by style (short sleeves, tanktops, sweaters, etc) and then by color (ROYGBIV order)...thats probably my most OCD thing.

I'm also big into routine and planning. LIke in the morning, I need to get ready the same way every day (shower first, then contacts, then makeup-in the same order every day, then clothes, etc). If this gets messed up I'm so thrown off. And with plans, even if its a small change I get pretty upset because its not the way I had in my head. I am trying to work on this because FI is NOT a planner, so I am slowly becoming more flexible on this!

Haha funny how writing about all this makes me feel slightly like a crazy woman. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with funny OCD tendancies!

OMG - I thought I was the only one that did this!! I swear, the only things I dry are underwear, socks, towels, and oversized t-shirts that I wear to bed. Everything else goes on the drying rack. I'm so glad that someone else is as paranoid as me about stuff shrinking. It makes it that much more normal. :D

I'm more into displaying anxiety behaviors than OCD.

ALso, i don't think hanging up clothes is OCD at all. It really does keep them from shrinking and helps them last longer AND keep from fading.

My FI knows what of mine can be dried and what can't. Wow. This is maybe why I'm marrying him. :P

You're right, it's not really OCD. I guess it's more because of my feeling that "OMG, if the laundry isn't done correctly, the world is going to end!" that I put it in the OCD category for me.

omg I seriously have crazy ocd behaviors!! FI tells me I need to go to a therapist about it! haha

Everything has to be "even" for me. The tv and radio volume has to be on an even number, i eat my food evenly (never one food all before the other), I eat candy, fruit, things of different color and flavor in order of how i like them... least favorite to most favorite. My clothes all have to match (including my underwear, undershirt and socks). It's annoying and it takes up a ton of my time!
