In my experience if the officiant is invited to the reception they are treated like a guest not hired staff because they aren't working at your reception. Therefore, he and his wife (another indication that he is a guest if he gets to bring a date) should be seated at a guest table and served a guest meal.

The officiant is not like another vendor because his duty if one of honor. You can't ask him to officiate your wedding and then sit with the photographer on her break. Does the FI's family know him personally? Is this their reverend? If so, why doesn't he sit with their family?

Don't you think that it would be really awkward for the reverend and his wife to be sitting by themselves most of the night? Because the vendors won't be sitting down for more than a few minutes to eat dinner- they'll be working (hopefully).
Often, if not usually, the vendor table is not even in the same room as the reception so seating the pastor and his wife in another room would really not be nice.
I don't even know what a vendor table is. WHich vendors are actually attending your reception and sitting down? Our photographer took a meal off to the side to eat, and our DJ took a plate back to his music booth to eat.
Your officiant should be seated with guests. Our officiant was a friend who was ordained to marry us and was sat with our other friends. If he hadn't been, I'd have sat him with the table of my family members, as I'm sure my grandmother would have been honored to sit with a clergyman.
Remember that it's possible he'll decline. I've heard from many brides that hired officiants (not pastors of churches attended by the couple) decline. Depending on your relationship with him, he may or may not attend the reception. I'd wait on the RSVP before you freak out too much.
