Not Engaged Yet

I Don't Know WHO Told, But I'm Going To Punch You, So FESS UP (Confessions of a Bridal Consultant)

So, I had a bride today.  I was feeling kind of perky (I had an AWESOME weekend).  This girl was a walk in, and we didn't really connect, as she's hispanic and her friend spoke more english than she did.  I didn't pay attention during the semester of spanish I took.  Whoops.

Any case, I get this girl in a couple dresses, and she's kind of liking this one, just hates the fabric in the skirt.  And so, I scour the racks to find her a similar one in a different fabric that actually fits her.  AND I DID IT.  I was so proud of myself.

So, I'm trying to make conversation while we're in the dressing room, find out they met in school, so I asked what she studied.  At which point she just looked at me like I had three heads.  So I said, "Oh, high school?"  And her response was "Yep.  I just graduated."  And my head thinks - wait, you JUST graduated HS?  Like, 2 months ago graduated?! And you've been together 3 years?! AND ENGAGED FOR A YEAR?!?!?!"  Okay, red flag numero uno has gone off.

So, she gets in front of the mirror in this dress, and kind of smiles and we add a veil and a poofy slip, and she loves it.  LOVES. It.  Hooray!  My job here is done?!

No.  No such luck.  We were going to sell her the dress off the rack since she doesn't have time to order, so I go work my number crunching magic, and come up with a not-so-ridiculous number that we can live with.  I bring the number back, and her response is one of "okay."  So, I walk away for a few minutes to let her come to terms with that number.  It always takes a few minutes.  And when I come back, her friend explains that she's concerned that her boyfriend doesn't have the money for the dress.

So, let's reiterate.

Girl comes in for dress.
I find the PERFECT dress.
Girl has JUST graduated from HS.
Girl has been engaged for a year.
Girl is still calling her SO her BF.

Which one of you sent me the crazy?
It wasn't me, I swear! But I've been waiting for an awesome story like this since you started working as a bridal consultant. This is awesome. So, <strong>my thought is that (even though of course she's super young) is there maybe not a translation of "fiance" from Spanish to English? What I remember from Spanish, the word for boyfriend and fiance were the same ("novio"). Maybe not?</strong> I stopped Spanish in college so I might be no help whatsoever.
    Posted by LivLeighton
Novio does mean boyfriend and fiance in spanish, so that could have been what's going on there.<div>
</div><div>The thing that got to me is it sounds like they needed a rush on the dress. Did she says she's like getting married right away?</div>

We spent THREE hours picking up a dress and a veil. Customers #2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (all mexican) walk in, get helped, and leave while I wait for them to (never) find my veil. I left with a different one. That I hate as much as I hate that business. And still need a veil.

I agree, I usually refer to FI as BF IRL just because the word fiancé makes me uncomfortable. Sounds like an annoying game of dress up to me. Sidenote- My phone automatically caps FI now.

So, what about her visit are you so distraught over? The fact that she got engaged at a younger age than you? Has been engaged longer than you? Fell in love with a dress she couldn't afford? Accidently says BF instead of FI? (something I do about a million times a day and I've been engaged nearly a year) What nerve.

Also, being engaged does not require having a ring. Not in my state at least.

FWIW - My parents got married out of HS and have been happily married 26 years. Your post comes off as judgey, ignorant, and frankly quite bitter.

How is she crazy? You are the one who sounds crazy.

<div>Whoa. Maybe I misread but it seems to me like the girl wasn't really engaged & was just trying on dresses for the fun of it.  If I was Peek I would have been extremely frustrated as well because this girl just wasted her time having her run around, crunch numbers, & get the ok to sell this dress off the rack.  She was venting about an experience she had at work which I thought was ok around here? And even if the girl IS engaged & I misread the situation, it still must be frustrating after spending all that time helping someone only to find out at the very end that it was for nothing.  I'm not sure what the purpose of your name-calling was. </div>

Yeah, while it's annoying to go through an appointment with someone, especially a very young someone, and have them not buy, it seems like it might be a cultural thing? I know she's young and without a ring, but do you at all think it could have been just a mistunderstanding?

I would find the snooty, b!tchy, must spend at least $3,000 on a dress or it's not good enough no matter how much I like it, where's my champagne, brides waaay more annoying!

But I totally see how frustrating this could be. The biggest red flag would be not havng her mom or boyfriend there (whoever is paying)! Did she even tell you a budget! How can you just try on things blind without knowing whether you can afford it or not. That's super dumb.
