S/o daycare

How did you guys go about finding your daycare? Did you just interview them?  How did you do comparisons?  Thanks.

    Pay attention Loveshine:

Honestly, I got in the car and thought about my route to work and how far off that path I'd be willing to drive.  Every daycare I passed, I wrote down the name/number.  Then I went home and looked up each daycare on our state's licensing website.  I looked at the reports/violations/teacher to kid ratio, etc.  Google earthed those b*tches and also looked at our property appraisers website to see the the land was owned or leased by the daycare/operater/owner.  Did some more googling and narrowed down my list.

Then I went to visit.  I went at different times of day and finally made a choice.

I spoke to everyone and anyone and got recommendations.  I then visited the daycare at random times and stared at the children to make sure they didn't show any signs of abuse/neglect/etc.  As Nico said, Google is a great resource to check them out.

dh and i based it on where we work, rather than where we live.  due to our hours and commute, this made the most sense.  that also meant we only have three available to us, and one was not an option, so it really meant just two.

dh and i made visits and asked questions separately, and compared answers.  we wanted to make sure that there was some consistency.  we also visited at pick up, which is kind of a busy time.  dh witnessed first hand a disciplinary situation, which was good to see.

we put down deposits at both, but we are really just pulling for a spot at one over the other.

Just FYI, we chose a daycare closer to home.  I work 40 miles from home and H is about 10 miles from home, but I'm the primary caregiving/doctor visit taker/dropoffer and pickerupper parent.  On the days I'm off, daycare is closed (you're going to want to check that policy and see if it matches your work days off), I'm sick or DD is sick, it's easier to go to the daycare around the street vs. going to the daycare in another town.

This is particularly helpful when I'm sick.  I can stay home and rest, but not have to take 2 hours to drop her off and pick her up.  It also means DD is in the car less, so if I were ever in an accident during traffic, she would already be at school, farting it up.

I called the 4 options in town.  They were all basically the same price and had the same policies so it really just came down to the actual facility and people.  I visited a couple of times and picked the one I liked.

    Then he got kicked out.

    google gave me squat...
And I'm so trying not to go where I work because driving Buffy to the ghetto every day skeers me.  *sigh*

But it does probably work for people who don't commute from Mayberry to the ghetto daily :-)

We talked to friends. Personally, we both wanted a place closer to home. We work in opposite directions so we wanted it to be feasible for either DH or me to pickup/drop off. We use a woman who works in her home which has it's perks but also has some sucky aspects. The woman we have now, as I mentioned before, also has SILs kid. We knew she was really good about keeping kids changed, keeping them occupied, clean, etc. We visited her and her house is pretty close to ours, and she's amazing with kids.

The one thing that sucks is that she's going on vacation next week (which she has every right to) but we have to have back up care for Mr. Chubby.
