I am not really expecting that people will change. But if people can vent about their FMIL, then I felt I should have the same opportunity to vent about this. And yes, I'm on a high horse... because these are peoples bodies and lives and health. Also, a couple of you have posted that long-term, low intensity cardio is not stupid. Here's the deal, and I meant ot post this but didn't. There are a slew of studies that show that there are certain biomechanics of overuse that happen when some trains endurance types of sports. Such as long term running, biking, etc. Tendonitis (which can be extremely painful if bad) is probably the most common of these injuries... however, joint damage, torn ligaments, etc are allextremely feasible. The risk for such injuries increases as peoples weight does... Shorter workouts at higher intensities can give you the same fat loss and cardiovascular benefits as long, slow workouts without the possibility of injury. Between the two, I will take the one that gets me the benefits, takes less time, and decreases my risk of injuries.
    Posted by MerAndTrick
I am training for a marathon right now. While I am not fast, it is certainly not a low-intensity workout. Your examples given (running, cycling) do not match the point you are trying to make there. If it is truly a low-intensity workout (like walking), I would assume the incidence of injury is much lower, making it particularly useful for people who are just getting into a workout program.

High intensity activity, regardless of duration, most certainly can carry the possibility of injury. It only takes one bad landing to damage a ligament in your knee (trust me on this one). While shorter duration, higher intensity workouts may reduce some of the repetitive-motion injuries, they are definitely not without risk - especially for someone new to working out.

The biggest issue I have with this post is for someone who is not used to working out. It takes time for a person's body to adjust to working out. Tendons, ligaments, joints, bones, etc all need time to adapt to the strain placed on them by exercise. Jumping suddenly into a high intensity workout program is asking for injury. Ask any physical therapist, athletic trainer or orthopedic doctor.

I had the same issue with this post as the PP above me. I've just started working out after being pretty sedentary, so if I even attempted a HIT routine tomorrow, I would more than likely hurt myself or not be able to make it past 10 minutes. Not everyone on this board is as fit as you must be, so the advice you gave wouldn't work for a big chunk of us.

The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way. I bet your one of those people who rolls your eyes when you see a chubster like me speed walking a track because I'm so obviously inferior to your physical abilities and knowledge.

She'd be rolling her eyes at me also. My orthopedic surgeon banned me from any type of high impact cardio - so no running, no step classes, nothing that puts a lot on my knee. The personal trainers at my gym all managed to put together low impact workouts for me that work.

There is a difference between high impact and high intensity, but neither is something that a beginner should just jump into because your body needs time to adjust - both structurally and cardiovascularily. Lower intensity workouts like walking (which is also low-impact, along with swimming, water aerobics, cycling, etc.) are a great way for someone who's just get used to working out to start. I don't think she was necessarily talking about high impact (kickboxing, etc), but nevertheless, her advice is more appropriate for someone who is already working out and has a base level of fitness. For those who are using this board for ideas to get them started, it is not good advice.

I agree with some of what you said! When I was in my best shape doing P90X and Insanity I actually weighed 10lbs more! Weight is the worse indication of weight loss. I tell people to take pictures and consider clothes sizes as a measurement (aka inches lost).

And yes weights weights weights. There is no way that you can bulk up like crazy or look like a man, our bodys are not made that way!

I do think that low intensity is good especially for those aging or beginning. I just can't stand the girls that come in and walk for 20 minutes and then leave. I'm like really? What did you burn?

This is very true! You just can't jump into HIIT workouts. But you could definately start building up your weights slowly but surely.

I guess it doesn't occur to you that maybe they're not trying to burn anything. Maybe they're not trying to build endurance. Maybe they had a really heavy leg workout the day before and just need to shake out and get the blood flowing. Or maybe they were restless and just want to move for a bit. Not everyone exercises to lose weight and get in better shape. Some people just enjoy moving for a short time.

And a 20 minute walk is better than 20 minutes sitting on the couch. It's people with an attitude like that that make people self conscious and not want to go to the gym.

I've read through this entire post, and wasn't going to comment, but I have something to add.... People like you are the reason I [and I'm sure tons of other people in the world] choose not to go to the gym.. I don't think anyone should be judged for how/when they workout. Like J&K said, 20 mins of walking is better then sitting on the couch. And the way you say that you are a gym regular, there every day...Does that give you the power to judge people?? You even say these people are there every day as well, so who cares if they bring a coffee and only walk for 20 minutes?! Why does that bother you so much?? I refuse to join a gym because I don't want to feel that I have to prove anything, and I definitely don't want to feel like I'm not doing 'enough' compared to others. I'm a firm believer that any exercise/activity is better then none, whether someone is trying to lose, maintain, or just remain active.
