Furniture??

Like some others posted... there is some stuff we need, but what we REALLY need is furniture (kitchen table & chairs, Couches,)
There is a bunch of smaller stuff we need as well: towels, vases, sheets, kitchen appliances, tools... ETC

Is it okay to register for furniture? I plan to add gift cards on there as well...

Re: Furniture??

  • i've seen people register for big ticket items, not so much expecting that someone actually purchase it, but just as a "wish list" kind of item.  my sister had a 42" LCD TV on her registry and we spread it by word of mouth that that is what they are saving for.  The only reason they actually put it ON the registry though was to get the completion discount (i think it was like 10-20%). they of course had many other smaller items that were reasonable to purchase.  most people, myself included, just gave gift cards or cash to help them purchase the tv and because they moved out of state 2 weeks after their wedding, so it was easier for them to just purchase their items there, instead of having to pack and move them all.

i haven't seen furniture store registries before, but i think you could get away with doing that as a "wish list" registry as long as you have a smaller registry for people to buy from as well.

  • Good point... FI wanted a BBQ as well... I told him, he should put it on the list and maybe family would get together to purchase it as a group :)
  • I think it would be okay to put a few pieces of furniture on the registry, but don't go overboard. For example, we put a console table and a media storage unit on our BBB registry, and both are less than the kitchenaid mixer we registered for. We also put the gift card option on our registry. We mainly put them on there so we could buy them after the wedding. We did the same with one leather chair from Sears.

Make sure if you do this though, that you register for enough things in a lower price point, so that everyone will be comfortable buying off of the registry.

  • Small furniture items that are within the general range of other items on your registry are totally fine.  Personally, I think it looks ridiculous when people register for couches and things.  If you're truly just doing it for the completion discount, then add it right before the wedding after most people have shopped.

Don't register for gift cards.  People know that gift cards are welcome and if they want to give you those they will.  Putting them on the registry is like registering for cash.

When people ask what you would like, you can tell them that you have a registry at X store, but you are also saving for furniture.

  • Definitely register for it! You never know what you may end up getting. Plus, a lot of companies give you discounts or hold completion events on things that haven't been purchased after the wedding.

  • What happened to that thread about judging registries?  I think it was on E.

Anyway, if they are reasonably priced, then I think furniture is okay.  But when I see like a $2K bed, etc, etc I feel like the couple is expecting people to spend a LOT of money on them and it looks greedy to me.  I could never do it for that reason.
