Short Term Leases/Extended Stay Hotels?

So, I got the wonderful task of trying to find a place to live (Not with H's 2 roommates) for the month (ish) that H has before he leaves for a long time. I have been craigslisting the crap out of the area we will be moving looking at subleasing, but many of those is just a room...or you would be sharing a house with other people. I'm sorry.. that is a little creepy, especially for Newlyweds.

NICE Extended Stay hotels are EXPENSIVE. Especially when we will be paying rent for three places (my apartment with all my stuff, his apartment with his roommates, and then a place for us together). Vacation rentals are even more expensive!

What we probably will end up doing is staying at one of those value motels (shudder) for a week or so, going on a Honeymoon (hellll yesssss), then staying a few more weeks in a value motel (yuck). I wouldn't mind staying at his current apartment, but his roommates work the opposite shift than H so they are always making noise in the middle of the night, not to mention they don't believe in A/C andI don't like sweating in my sleep.

But I guess the topic of this post, (Besides whining)  is asking if there are any other places I can look? Maybe someone has some uncovered gem of a website that I can use.

there is temp housing on AHRN. I don't know if any of them are furnished or not though... I would imagine there are some. ETA: I know this isn't the traditional reason for needing temp housing, but... you could always call the people that have the rooms and see.

Also, you could stay in the transient barracks on base for a fee. I think in Jax it's like 40/night. It's on base, but it's at least like a nicer hotel. Same for Navy Lodge, tho I think that's slightly more expensive (But still not high, and def not crap motel).

How about the Navy Lodge? Their rates are usually much better than civilian hotels/motels.
  • Thanks, I'm going to have to check out AHRN. I don't know about the barracks though, they don't normally have kitchens, besides a microwave and me being my picky self I want to be able to have a kitchen.... I know... so demanding.  Navy Lodge was the first thing that I looked at... (still no kitchens)... but they were full. =( I do like the Navy Lodge at H's base.. it is right on the beach and really nice.

I did find a condo for only a little over what I wanted to pay, but it doesn't have any internet... and I need secure internet to work, so unless they can get internet easily it may be a moot point. On the other hand... I'm trying to convince H to convince his roommates to go on their pre-deployment leave the week after ours so we can stay in the apartment that week without them.

Goodness, this is a PITA....it will work out I'm sure...if worse comes to worse we can stay at his apartment... I just don't REALLLLLY want to. KWIM? I'm sure that is on the same level as living with your ILs-- Cab? what say you? Haha.

  • Our apartment building offers executive suites. Basically they turned the models into short term rentals (could be for family for a weekend or a week/month etc). Problem is, I don't know where they advertise it. Perhaps check out other apartment complexes.

As for the AC/Roommates wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a couple fans?  or Talk with them about a compromise for 2 months (perhaps you and your H kicking in a couple extra bucks into untilities?)

  • I've used a website called padmapper to look for places. It basically combines a bunch of listings in an area, including subleases. You'll probably see the same craigslist ones you've already found, but it might be worth seeing if there's anything else.

Yes, Yes it would, and we will probably end up staying there unless something falls from the sky... One of the roommates is kind of an asss and thinks he is God's gift to the world and if he doesn't want the AC on, the AC will NOT be on. (we have had this discussion when I would go visit before). And if at 2am he wants to watch a movie in surround sound, he will. And probably the most annoying one was cooking bacon at 3 am... nothing says "WAKE UP" like bacon.

Anyway, I want to bitch and whine about having to live with roommates as newlyweds. Haha.

  • So you would be there with the roommates for what two weeks total or something like that?  I am not trying to be a b!tch but if it were me, I would just suck it up and not spend money. I might would go and stay somewhere for the weekend if I wanted alone time.  That is just me I guess.  I mean one of H's friends was staying with us when H deployed. To me it just seems like a bigger pain in the butt than needed.

Good luck.  I hope you get everything figured out.

Crown - Totally understandable and I don't think you are a bitch for suggesting it...in fact I agree with you about saving money!  But, H isn't exactly on-board with it. He doesn't want to spend our short time together with his roommates; one of which he can't stand and isn't even a friend. I don't know if that is just H's feelings or partly the roommates not wanting us there. It can be an awkward situation for everyone...I mean it isn't a very big apartment.

I may be able to talk him into it if I dangle weekend trips in front of his nose.

  • I vote the weekend trips. Especially if he's working during the week and you are to? (that's what it sounds like). I would plan weekend trips to different places. Probably cheaper, and more fun for you guys that way.

  • I've had to do a few long term trains for work, I also try to stay at candlewoods.  They tend to be lower cost and still decent quality.  I think they're owned by Holiday Inn, but don't hold me to that.
