Marriage License Question

I'm not sure if it's unclear on the Hawaii Dep't of Health website... or if it's too early in the morning. Can someone outline the process required to get a Hawaii marriage license?

Do we HAVE to go into the dep't of health when we get to Oahu, or can we do it COMPLETELY online? Apply online, pay online, receive the license online.

Or if we do it online, do we have to also stop into the dep't of health with our application to receive the license?

Dumb it down for me. My brain is all over the place lately Tongue OutEmbarassed

Re: Marriage License Question

  • I haven't gotten mine yet since I'm not getting married until May 2, but I was told by my wedding coordinator that you can fill out the application and pay for it online but you do have to go to the Department of Heath to actually receive the license. They need to see you in person and you need to show them identification.

    Hope that helps! :)

  • I know this is going to be hard but call them during the hours specified. We were actually able to meet one of their social workers at her house to receive th license. We never had to go to the Dept of health
  • WOOT- we're May 16th! Just planning ahead :)

    Thanks!

  • Cass I'm May 16th too! Yay! Our officiant told us we could fill it out online within 30 days but go to the department of health when we get to Hawaii. He said to go early lines can get long.
  • That's really funny we literally never had to go to the Dept of health for anything wedding related
  • APLovesKP, are you guys having yours on Oahu as well? Rock on!

  • I'm new to the boards and this is my first post (woohoo!), but just wanted to add that if you're staying in Waikiki, you can get an appointment at the Sheraton Waikiki instead of the Dept. of Health. That's what we're planning to do to avoid the lines!

    More info here.

  • We filled our online application before we went and then went to the department of health to get our official marriage license to give to our officiant. It only took about 10 minutes once we got there, but we totally got lost on Punchbowl st lol! Wish I would have known about the option to get it done at the Sheraton Waikiki- that would have saved a lot of headache. If you do go to the department of health there are 2 entrances. The one on the left hand side I think is where all the locals go for actual "health care" related issues and the one on the right is for the marriage licenses. We thought we are going to be waiting forever because there were so many people lined up, but there was only one couple in front of us, so it went super quick.
  • I must be missing something. Where does it say on that page you linked that you can go to the Sheraton instead? I just see the address for the dept of health on Punchbowl st.? I would love to bypass the lines if possible...

Oh how odd! Now I see it. I viewed it from my phone before and it showed it differently. Thank you so much, this is really fantastic!!

  • my friend just found out about the Sheraton Waikiki option from her WC, it is something new. Still best to do paperwork on line to save time when you pick up license.
  • That's so odd, but I'm glad you found it!

The person I spoke to at the Sheraton said to fill out the application online first. When we come to the hotel at our scheduled appointment time, it should take no more than 5-10 minutes onsite. Sounds easy enough!

  • You can fill it online but you have to go in person with your ID.  Or you can set up to meet someone in their home, our coordinator gave us an individual that has agreed to meet us at her home on Sunday since we are getting married Monday.  We would of had to be up early Monday and go to the Dept of Health early which I hear the process is pretty quick.
