Ireland Honeymoon?

So this is my first post and any tips or advice are welcome! :)

My fiance is half Irish and has been to Ireland and fell in love. (With IT, I came later.) He had mentioned that a honeymoon in Ireland would be awesome and while I wanted to go to Paris I looked up Ireland honeymoons online and it kind of sucked me in.

I came across this site: http://www.myguideireland.com/the-fairytale and completely fell in love with the idea of staying 3 nights in a castle!

So anyone hear of anything like this? I haven't done too much research on this site and I don't want to just dive into anything too quickly, especially when it's a site I have never been to before and the location is out of the US. Any thoughts or opinions? Anyone have or want to go to Ireland on their honeymoon?

Re: Ireland Honeymoon?

  • I have stayed in a couple of Castles in Ireland. The best one was Ashford Castle.

This site is a good start to see the various castles that you can stay in and gives a price guide as it can be expensive. www.celticcastles.com/find_irish.asp">http://www.celticcastles.com/find_irish.asp

Good luck Ireland is a beautiful place to visit especially once you get out of Dublin.
  • Trip Advisor was very helpful in deciding where to go in Dublin.  Also look up Giant's Causeway, definitely a beautiful and interesting place to visit.  My favorite are all the stories of how Giant's Causeway was made.  When we went to Ireland we went to Donegal, Belfast and Dublin.  We saw one castle, which was interesting, but being outdoors and seeing the beautiful landscape was preferrable to me.  Ireland is very hilly so if you're driving, everywhere you go are these beautiful views.

  • I just got back from about 10 days in Ireland. I'll be honest we spent about a week in Galway and a weekend in Dublin. Dublin was okay but no where near as fun and beautiful as Galway and the west coast. I know I'm completely biased but II agree with PP, Ireland is beautiful once you get out of Dublin!

  • I will second the suggestion of looking on Trip Advisor. When my H and I took a trip there a few years ago we stayed a night in a castle to the northwest of Dublin. I don't quite remember the name, maybe Ross Castle? (There are multiple Ross Castles in Ireland, Heh). It was interesting. The owners were a couple and their kids. They didn't live there, but in the nearby village, so at night we were left to ourselves. We stayed in the Tower Room, at the top of the round tower and in the original castle. The rest of the rooms were in newer parts of the castle, added on much later. It was fascinating and rustic.  We loved it.

The thing about castles in Ireland is that most of the older ones that survived are really not much more than keeps. A central building with several stories, with the private rooms being on the top floors for safety. When you look at websites and they talk about staying in Irish "castles" a lot of what they are listing are actually Georgian mansions, or large estate houses.
