How Did it Happen?

Amer's response in the GTG thread made me wonder...how did you all meet FI/DH?

FI and I went to the same college.  We saw each other all the time, but he had a gf so we never really hung out.  After he and gf broke up, we started hanging out and being sort of friends with benefits because he was graduating and neither of us wanted a commitment.  Well, 7 plus years later we're engaged!

We met at work.  We both started in the same new hire class right out of college.

We met through a mutual friend, our best man. I have known him since I was 16, and he somehow met FI, I think they had mutual motorcyle riding buddies. Then BM intorduced me to FI, and we all used to hang out... the rest is history :)

FI and I actually rode the same bus together to middle school but weren't friends b/c he was two grades younger than me.  I actually do remember an incident though where I chased away some bullies who were trying to beat him up at the bus stop (he denies this ever happened haha)  After college FI became friends with some of my friends back in Philly and when I flew back home for a visit one summer we reconnected and started a long-distance relationship until he decided to move out to LA to be with me.

    Okay trying this again.......

We met indirectly at work - we didn't work together directly, or even for the same company for that matter, but occasionally we had work dealings.  When we did - we would have this flirtiness going on that I called our 'witty banter' .. however I had a boyfriend of almost FIVE years, and he had a girlfriend - so we let the flirtiness stop right there.

Fast forward to 2 years later when Myspace was invented (thanks, tom!) .. I was friends on there with a few of his co-workers and then came across his page.  I had just broken up with my long term boyfriend a few weeks earlier, and his page said "single" .. woo hoo.  I emailed him to see how he was doing.  We emailed back and forth about a billion times that night - I seriously sat there refreshing my screen once I realized he was online at the same time (had FB existed, we would have been chatting instead of emailing I'm sure).  Finally I gave him my number and said call me sometime.  A few nights later we talked, and then went to lunch.  Lunch led to the movies, and so on and so forth to marriage!

ok, so I gave you the abbriviated version of us.

My sophomore year of college I was living with a transfer from Kutztown named Susan.  I was dating a boy named JP that I knew from work, and Susan had a casual boyfriend.  The third girl in our group, Kristin, did not have a boyfriend so Susan had this great idea to bring up a friend of hers from KU to set up with Kristin.  One night in October 2000, JEGs came up, met Kristin, and then made it very clear to Susan he was NOT interested in her.  JEGs and I were friendly with each other, and kept in touch via AIM ( remember that?)

Fast Forward to June 2001.  My boyfriend dumped me for my WH0RE of a friend, and JEGs and I decided to hang out one day.  He came to Bensalem, and we went mini golfing, ate at Nifty Fifties and went to see Shrek- it was seriously like 3 dates in one day.  Two days later I asked him to come up and spend the day with me for my birthday.  We went to South Street.  Being a country boy, he was freaked out and didn't understand why there was gum all over the trees.

Because my breakup with my ex boyfriend was kind of messy, I had already commited to living down the shore forthe summer.  I invited JEGs to come spend a day, and we went to the beach, the lighthouse and at night we laid on the beach looking for shooting stars.

and that's where we had our first kiss.

Well, for our first date, we met at a bar in No Libs close to where I used to live (North 3rd -- LOVE IT), and then we went out for sushi. I went to the beach that weekend with some new friends, and one of them still talks about how I talked about that first date and how it went well and I was excited!  Second date we went to La Stalla up in Newtown, third date was Nifty Fifties for dinner, a milkshake that the server spilled all over me, and mini-golf. This was all after a few weeks of long phone conversations, so there was already a connection. We met in July, and by August he was going to my cousin's wedding with me and meeting the whole family -- he's a brave one!

Honestly, it's crazy to me that we met that way. I went on a TON of first dates (5 in one weekend if we can count Thursday), many fewer second dates, and maybe 3 third dates. We weren't "matched" right when I joined, so glad that we finally were!

My story is far from romantic... our first kiss was major PDA in the middle of a bar while drunk (really drunk).  Haha.  Gotta love college.  The good thing is that we had no expectations for our relationship so it just naturally happened.

my momma.. ok I will elaborate.

My family moved next door to FI mummer's club in February 2004. FI was one of two guys that would say hi to my mom ask if there were any problems with noise, etc.

Fast forward to August 2007, I was out one day down the shore with my family at a mummer event and FI said hi to my mom, she say's hi, have you met my daughter? Pushes us away to dance and the rest is history.

I was at University of Delaware and failed physics because my prof. was an idiot and gave F's to 180/360 students then on top of that gave D's to another portion of students. So he literally didn't pass more than half his students because he can't teach. FI was at the University of Arizona and, well, he decided to have fun instead of going to class. He aced his first three tests and bombed his last three and so he didn't pass either. So we both took a physics summer class at Rowan since we're both from Jersey. It was the only University offering physics I (otherwise FI would've gone to Stockton since it's closer to him).

I actually liked another guy, but I apparently caught FI's eye the very first day. So the second day FI sat where I sat the first day hoping I'd sit next to him (it was lab benches, so only 2 students per bench) but I sat at another table hoping the other guy that I had initially liked would sit next to me, which he did. The third day, FI held the door for everyone but as soon as I entered the room he cut the rest of the line off so he could follow me into the class so he could sit next to me. That day we didn't stop talking for the entir 4 hour class. Needless to say, the prof. hated us that day. We hung out for about 8-12 hours a day for the rest of the summer.

He eventually broke up with me but he came crawling back... :)

Here's my story..... I have always had the WORST dating luck.  Never was able to meet guys, for whatever reason, and just didn't date a lot.  So I turned to my good friend J.  J-Date.  I did jdate (and eharmony, yahoo personals, etc etc) on and off for years both in LA and here in Philly.  I have some FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC dating nightmare stories. I used to entertain my friends for hours with some of the gems I've dated.  In 2007-8 I had a serious relationship wtih a disaster of a guy that kind of messed me up.  We broke up and I proceeded to, um, let loose a little and ended up with a FWB guy and another guy who I had a huge crush on, but who treated me like absolute sh!t.  I finally ditched both of them and took a break.

Then I decided to give Match.com a try, a site I hadn't done in a long time.  I started talking to someone and we had a few dates, it was a crash-and-burn situation.  So I canceled my membership.  I had exchanged a few emails with a guy who was out of my age range, but whose profile just kept bringing me back.  With my subscription expiring in about 2 hours, I emailed him my personal email and said I was done, but if he was interested to write to me.

He did, we emailed a bit more, then he called and we had a great convo and set up a date.  We met at Kildares in Manayunk for drinks. When I walked in, the first thing I said was "Holy GOD that is some red hair."  We talked for hours and when we left I gave him a peck on the cheek outside.  Later that week we had dinner and went to Dave & Busters and proceeded to makeout like teenagers in his car outside my apartment.  We dated for about a month or two before things got really serious.  He was unlike anyone I'd ever dated and restored my faith that there WERE good guys out there.  8 months later we got engaged. :-)

FI and I met in high school

We actually met at band camp (yea yea I know..one time at band camp...hahaha) His mom forced him to be in band and my best friend forced me-- but it wasn't really as dorky at my school i guess ;)
Anywho-- he spotted me first but I had a boyfriend at the time... a bunch of us went to the pizza hut that used to be right next to our school (its now a paint store) before a football game one day and me and FI ended up chatting the whole time.  A couple days later me and the boyfriend broke up (after a long intense 2 week relationship where I think we spoke to each other twice the entire time hahaha) so 2 weeks later at a football game FI asked me to be his girlfriend.

We dated on and off until sophomore year of college and then he said 'I dont want to be with anyone else' and we never were. And now here we are :)

(hence why we did our engagement photos at our old high school--- oh the memories ;)

See that, right when you are reading to give up - you find the one :)   Things like that always happen.. I found Ben when I was stuck in a dead end relationship that I honestly expected to end in a mediocre marriage and was pretty much okay with that.  I took a chance and dated Ben, even though I had always ended up back with my ex, so I almost wondered what the point was.  It was fun at the time though - and I thought, at least it'll get me out of the house and on a few nice dates before I get back together with my ex (we always broke up and got back together).  Needless to say, that didn't happen this time around.

Yeah, I heard that many, many times...that once you stop trying, you find the one.  I stopped trying a lot, haha.   I hit a lot of low times.  So did FI. It was worse for him since he has 10 years on me and has friends with kids in high school.  So glad those days are over and I hope to never revisit them!

    These stories are so cute!!

FI and I met through a mutual friend. His best friend from grade school went to the same college as me. Fast forward to post-college and that very same friend invited me to his birthday bash (a cowboys & indians themes party). FI and I chatted/flirted a bit that night, but nothing too special. The following weekend, a big group of us went out to local bar and FI and I both happened to be there. We spent the whole night drinking beer and chatting one-on-one and at the end of the night we had our first kiss.

I was actually at the end of a very crappy relationship with a guy that treated me like poop, so this encounter made me realize how much better things could be. FI and I hung out as friends for awhile, while my then bf became my ex-bf. Gradually about 2-3 months later, we made it official and the rest is history! I know it is super cliche and super cheesy, but I think I knew I was going to marry him after knowing him for about 2 weeks! =)

cara-- hahaha  really? FI hates when I tell people we met in band....he's like 'can you just say high school?' lol  I'm like whatever, I dont care.  Almost our entire group of friends in made up of our band friends (not to mention our best man, 2 groomsmen and my bridesmaid)  We're the first of the crew to get married so everyone is excited haha

Jess - the people from HS I'm still friends with are the people from the band.  One of my BMs got married a few years ago and they have the cutest pictures of them when they were the drum majors together.  Band people are incestuous. Just saying.  I can probably count 15 people who married someone else from band over the years.

Ooods- I was the same way with JEGs when I first met him.

I figured he was jsut a rebound from my ex, and I was very VERY resistant to become serious with him because I thought I'd always just end up with the ex.

I'm so glad I took a chance with Justin too.  He makes me so happy :)

My mom yanked me from public high school (wrong crowd, bad grades, no interest in college) and sent me to Bishop Eustace, a private school in SJ.  I was introduced to J, the really, really tall funny guy in front of the vending machines in the caf one day.  We became pretty good friends and we had the most flirtatious friendship ever... but it never went beyond that.  Eventually he started actively pursuing me and I didn't want to destroy our great friendship - I thought if we started dating and it didn't work out, I'd lose a good friend.  The chase went on for about a year - he left for college and I was a year behind, still in high school.  The year I graduated HS, we both had shorehouses in Margate and I finally caved and went on a date with him. After that, we became completely inseparable and totally fell in love.  I mean, head over heels in love - the kind you see in movies.  :)  He was at Loyola College, so I decided to transfer from Rowan to UMD to be closer to him.  The odds were stacked against us - being HS sweethearts - but we made it!  It will be exactly 9 years, 1 month on our wedding date.  9/9/01-10/9/10

I was also in band in HS and college.  I know tons of college band couple, none form HS though.  One of my BM was in color guard in HS with me and another was a sax in my college band.

I moved to London and didn't know anyone, I spent a few weeks sitting home watching tv.  I decided moved here to go out and see things so I joined a social group.
I signed up to go to a cocktail party and convinced a girl at work to go with me.  I had a headache and didn't want to go, but I went for Claire.  I met FI, Claire  said at the end of the night he was really into me, but I wasn't sure.  He emailed me through the group's site and asked me to meet him Sat.

We went to another social together first on Sat as I had already signed on and refused to cancel for him.  The other people ended up being lame though so we ditched them.  We spent the rest of the day and night together and had our first kiss at London Bridge tube station.

Claire is now one of my BFFs and is doing a reading at the wedding.  If I hadn't asked the other BM so early I would ask her to be a BM as well.
