Travel Insurance

Where do you get travel insurance? Through your own insurance company maybe, or an independant place? Anybody have any experience with this? I did a little research but it's hard to know what companies are reputable, as I've never heard of most of them. I would like to get insurance to cover us in mostly in case our flights to Europe are late/cancelled and make us miss anything we book in advance, like hotels or train tickets. TIA for any advice!

Re: Travel Insurance

  • Our travel agent booked it for us when she booked the honeymoon. did you use a travel agent? even if you didn't, you should call one and maybe they can send you in the right direction.
  • The travel agent we contacted hasn't gotten back to me in 2 weeks, so we decided to just plan it on our own. Thanks for the tip, we might get it through a TA. What does your insurance cover?

  • I've gotten it through whoever I've booked through, like travelocity or cheapcaribbean.
  • AAA gave me a quote when I was looking into it for a cruise a few years ago.  You can probably just google travel insurance and see what your search comes up with.  Any travel agent should be able to help you, even if it wasn't the one you booked your trip through.

You can get policies that cover a wide variety of things from airfare coverage to lost luggage to trip interruption.
  • Our hotel was booked through a TA, and we added insurance through them.  Our flights, which were separate, were booked through Continental, and we were able to add the insurance when we booked the tickets.  Both of them are cancel-for-any-reason policies.

  • Your travel agent has access to different types of travel insurance.  My company uses RBC Insurance or the insurance offered by the supplier.  If you want to research yourself just google "travel insurance" and you can look into each company individually.

  • I have used travel-safe.com
  • You can compare policies on www.insuremytrip.com. Make sure you read the fine print (and keep in mind that as far as Europe goes, if one of those volcanoes go off again, that isn't covered).

  • I always use a company called Travelex. You can check them out online at travelex-insurance.com. They have different base plans that haven't different amounts of things such as how much you get for Trip Cancellation, or baggage delay, etc etc...so you can choose the base plan that works for you, and then at the end you can add on things like extra medical, car rental insurance, etc. I usually use the TraveLite as I'm able to add car rental to it. If you don't need car rental, then you can save a little bit by using the Travel Select, which is pretty much the same plan I believe. You just put in where you live, what dates, how many travelers and the price of the trip for each (so if it's a $5000 trip put $2500 next to each person) and then it'll tell you the cost of it (which is total, not per person) for the base plan. HTH! GL!
  • i've used insuremytrip.com for years!
be careful-you must read and understand all coverages, exclusions, terms, conditions etc.. i'd NEVER buy any kind of insurance blindly-meaning not knowing what it covers adn what it dosen't.
for example-if you plane is delayed and you miss a connection-it might be covered, might not be. read the coverages.
you'll look for AM Best ratings for the companies-they're based on financial strentgh. A+ is the best. i'm a commercial insurance agent and it scares the hell out of me when i see people saying 'oh i just bought this or bought that' but don't bother to read what it covers and then they get angry when they have an issue and find out that it's not covered. ugh!
and buying just from TAs blindly scares me the most. ::shivers::
