I'm the oldest daughter in my generation and the first to be married. Our wedding is a big thing for my dad's side of the family. My father and I haven't had a good relationship since I became a teenager. He isn't cruel, just insensitive and very stubborn. We haven't talked since the end of August. I'm not ready to talk to him because I don't want to cry anymore either on the phone or after the conversation is over.
To make a long story short, my fiance and I, along with some spiritual help from our officiant, have decided it is appropriate for my dad to receive an invitation because it is a family event; however, I don't see our relationship mending in the next six months to the point I won't be nervous on my wedding day. I would probably be happier if he wasn't there. I really don't want him to walk me down the aisle.
I would love to have my favorite uncle (whose house we are getting married at) walk me down, but if my dad is there, I'm expecting his feelings will be really hurt and my uncle may not be comfortable making his brother feel that way. If I emotionally detach myself from the situation, I would want my dad there because it is a family event, but this is my big day and it might be better for my sanity if he isn't.
What should I do?
