Honest Opinion: Cupcakes at the Reception?

Re: Honest Opinion: Cupcakes at the Reception?

• I am doing a cake, but see no problem with cupcakes. I dont think formality matters either. If you want them go for it. And for those who say they are messy...use a fork...easy peasy!

• Honestly, I love the cupcake idea! I'm doing it! a few different flavors and some with filling! Maybe if you like the idea of a cake cutting, you can get a very small cake (maybe just enough for the two of you or your wedding party) for the design aspect as well as a cake cutting. Then have them bring the cupcakes out as soon as you're done cutting your cake.
• You can eat a cupcake with a fork.. so provide a couple forks.

The idea isn't for me, but it is a cute idea! I went to a formal, beauitful wedding and they had funfetti cupcakes in lieu of a cake (albeit professionally decorated funfetti). It was soo cute! It just showed a bit of the couples "fun" attitude in such an elegant situation.

I can't image a guest looking at cupcakes and thinking any less of your reception.
• I had cupcakes at our 130 person wedding. They were all made by a friend/employee of mine ahead of time. She also made us a small 5x5 cake for the top of the stand for us to cut. My hubby built the stand & we covered it in fabric from JoAnn's that matched our napkins on the tables. It was amazing and I'm still getting compliments to this day! I say go for it! If they are too messy, guests can use a fork- just like a cake!
• I say go for the cupcakes!! It's easier for everyone involved, plus it's different! I think you'll love it.

• I'm team cupcake... so go for it! Cupcakes can be as fancy as your baker can make them. We are doing gourmet cupcakes and so far everyone loves the idea. We have five flavors so that there is a variety.

• I like the idea of cupcakes, if they fit the style. I do think it's more casual or whimsy.

I wouldn't count on saving the cake cutting fee, though. Typically, that charge is for them to serve the cake and for use of the dishes. You really want to offer plates and forks, so most places are going to charge that fee anyway.

I'm not at all a cake person because I don't like frosting. That being said I do not think I have had cake with filling ever in my 25 years on this earth. Is this a regional thing or have I just been living in a cave?? I had not heard of cake "filling flavors" until I joined the knot. I live in the heart of the midwest.

• I think cupcakes are a great idea - you can serve them as formally (i.e plate, fork) or casually (grab-n-go) as you like!

• Both my FI and i love cupcakes, but have decided to go with a traditional cake only because when we were first talking about it he told me that cupcakes are perfect for throwing and he doesn't know if after a few drinks if he would be able to not throw one at me. He also told me not to be surprised if he just throws me over his shoulder when he decieds that it's time to leave the reception. As long as your FI isn't crazy like mine, cupcakes are a wonderful idea
• ive got a 5 tier cupcake tower and a 9 inch cake on top... holds 200 cupcakes easily and you defintely can have filling in your cupcakes.. i have red velvet with cream cheese fillings as one of my tiers... i didn't want to bother with worrying about who is cutting the cake and handing it out... but it's whatever suits you and your FI...

• Cupcakes are SO hot right now and everyone LOVES them! They are pretty and can be done in many different designs and flavors!

I'm all for it! Best wishes!

• We are having cupcakes on a tiered cupcake tower with a small cake on top which will be saved for the one-year anniversary tradition. I am so happy with this decision. It will be much more cost effective. We are having a less formal, more fun and relaxed reception and the cupcakes will fit into this nicely. It will look fun and classy at the same time, not child-like at all.

• We did cupcakes. People loved them and it was easy for people to take one home if they wished.
• I am cupcake obsessed, but I'll be doing a cake at my wedding. I've always wanted a reason to have a big huge cake, so this is my chance. :-) But...the dessert at the rehearsal dinner will be cupcakes from Crumbs, my favorite.

• I agree with pp on cupcakes are messy. Plus I feel like if you do cupcakes you have to forgo the actual cutting of the cake. But that's just me.

• We served cupcakes, and the guests loved them. We opted to do all white cupcakes with white frosting (with some small floral decor on top) to keep the wedding look. Also, we worried that people may take more than one if there were more than one flavor to try.

Also, if you choose to do the "cupcake tower," be careful that it is very stable. Our baker warned us that some are made cheaply and when cupcakes are removed, the balance shifts and the whole towe can topple over. We opted to use several cake stands at different heights (see pic in bio).

We also skipped tke cake cutting altogether. More time for dancing :-)
• I personally don't get what the cupcake advantage is. Cakes can have different flavors on different layers, also, the cake can be cut and served easily. On the other hand, if you love cupcakes, and it fits the feel of your wedding great.

Exactly. Any good reputable baker knows this too. Also mindboggling is the idea that many people adamantly believe that cakes and cupcakes are made from entirely different recipes and ingredients. It's impossible to say you hate the taste and texture of regular cake and icing but you absolutely adore cupcakes and the frosting used on those when *they are the exact same thing* in both situations.

I completely agree. There is no reason that if you must have a cutting of some sort that you can't do that with the cupcake itself. But people don't believe it is possible to do so.

I agree! I dont get it when people say that!!! Cupcakes are a style preference, not a taste preference! And cakes can come in different flavors! My cake is four different flavors, one each layer! Im a fan of either choice though...

• We are having a larger wedding, predicting 250 people. We ordered a three-tiered cake that feeds 95 in one flavor and we ordered 150+ cupcakes in 2-3 other flavors. I think it is a good alternative and a lot easier for people to serve. So you can have a cake for those who are too messy for cupcakes and cupcakes for those who enjoy them. Best of both worlds!

I was against it at first. But now I've realized that I can have more flavors for people to choose from, and some of them are even filled! (for those of you who said they'd miss the filling in cake). We are having a small round cake "topper" style, but otherwise I think cupcakes are great. I don't think it has anything to do with the formality of the wedding, as you can do some really elegant displays with adult-flavored cupcakes (tiramisu, anyone??).

I'm not sure about all of these women having trouble eating cupcakes. I'm pretty good at eating one with a fork!

Also, I guess I got lucky - in my case, it's cheaper for me to do cupcakes than a tiered cake!

• Hi! I wanted cupcakes at my wedding at first until I realized that the average nice wedding cupcake costs $3 while a slice of wedding cake would cost $1.25.
We're also trying to have an eco-friendly ceremony and reception and the cupcake wrappers just add more waste.
Good luck though! Cupcakes are really cute and give you a variety of display (and flavor) options.
• I love cupcakes and think as long as you don't have a plastic sparkle kids ring in them they are a great idea!
• I'm on Team Cupcake! We are doing cupcakes too with a small cake on top. You can totally eat them with a fork so messy shouldn't be a problem. And I love the idea of having more than one flavor, which is what we're also doing. We are planning to have 2 cupcakes per person and have someone serve them, so that everyone gets their share, which is how cake would be distributed anyway. The major reason why we chose them is because here where we live, they cost half as much as a traditional tiered cake.
• We are having cupcakes! But we are also getting a 10" round cake to cut just for the pictures because he is very traditional.

Our cupcakes are going to be served on pedestal cake stands in the center of each table, 4 flavors (2 of each to choose from). So I also saved on not needing center pieces now... I have eaten cupcakes at weddings in the past and was just fine without getting it all over me. If you want cupcakes go for it. You save on a cake cutting fee too!Wink
• we are doing cupcakes as well. I think people are being a little ridiculous if they are adults and getting icing on their faces and/or being messy.
happy planning!
