Last name change

Did any of you ladies feel apprehensive about changing your last name? I am really excited to take my fiance's name. I just think I am going to mourn the "loss" of my own last name. I really identify with it because of my heritage.

Re: Last name change

  • It was weird, but I got over it.  Sometimes I still forget and call myself by my maiden name.

It was a pain in the butt dealing with pharmamcy, insurance, titles, deed, credit cards, etc.  But once it was done, it was fine.

  • It felt weird at first but I'm glad I did change it. It took me almost a year to finally conceed to do it, though.

  • I can't wait. I write my name with my new last time all the time just because I love looking at it. But I am keeping my maiden name as my middle name.

  • It's weird to see my name now, but just because it's different.  I'm sure that part won't last long, but we've only been married for 4 weeks, so it's still pretty new.  I don't miss my maiden name though.

  • I had a hard time and still do. I loved the way my first and old last name sounded together. Plus I was old last name for 29 years. It wasn't easy for me.

  • Ditto Hike.  I like the way my first name sounded with my maiden name way more.  Plus my first name is Steph(anie). Not really unique.  My maiden name is really uncommon, and H's/my new last name is one of the 10 most common last names (literally.)  So that was kind of a weird shift for me.

I kept my maiden name as a middle name, though.
  • I have my maiden name as my middle name too. My old middle name was after my grandfather and I felt sad about getting rid of it. So when I checked into social security I asked the lady if I could have middle name, maiden name as my middle name. She said yes. Two hours later, when I finally got called to the agent or whatever, he told me the computer didn't have enough spaces for middle name, maiden name. I had to decide right on the stop and actually got choked up.

  • Whaaa? I have two middle names!  The guy at the SS office had to hyphenate my middle and maiden names though, so the system would understand what my last name was. (i.e. make sure it didn't see it as maiden new as my last name.)

My name is now 31 letters long. ha
  • Ditto Duds.  Who knew it would be harder to change my name with Comcrap than the freaking government?
  • I'm in the maiden as middle name camp too.  I love having H's name - didn't even consider not changing it.

  • I have two middle names too and didn't have to hyphenate anything.

I just moved my maiden to a second milddle.  Of course now I have 20 characters total, so that might be part of it.

He wouldn't let me. Mine would have been 33. Damn social security guy.

  • No apprehension here at all. I didn't like my maiden name, and I love my married name, so the switch was really easy. No way was I moving my maiden name to my middle name.
  • I'll probably change mine someday, but I don't know how I'll feel about it yet. I'll have to keep my maiden name professionally, so in a way I won't really lose it since I'll be known by both.

Ditto this.  And I only kind of sort of use it socially, really.

  • We were married over a year ago and I still don't have my name changed on everything (like store credit cards. I think only 2 that I actually use frequently have my new name on them). It was weird at first but I went from a fairly common last name to a really unique one, so I liked that. I did not keep my maiden name at all--my middle name is my previous middle name.

You can always hang onto your maiden name for awhile until you decide for sure if you want to change. A good friend got married in May and just changed her name legally last week. She was attached to her maiden name but ended up changing because it made her husband happy and she was OK with doing it. But don't feel rushed to change it immediately.

Ditto...I'm working towards becoming a dr and have always invisioned Dr.MaidenName, but want to be known socially as Mrs.Hisname. I'll be keeping my name, but I'm curious: when you change your name to his and have your maiden name as your middle name, can you legally go by either name? Or does it have to be what's on your SS card?

  • I already have two middle names. I don't want to hypenate my name either. I really do want to change my name. I have already practiced my new signature. I guess it will just take me awhile to get used to being called Mrs.H.LastName.

He didn't change his name and I didn't change mine.

I plan on doing the same thing. I think as long as there's a record of all your last names and combinations thereof, it's okay. On legal documents, you probably want the name on your SSN, but credit cards, whatever, it should be okay. My mom's done that for the past 40 years and my dad was an accountant, she stuck to the rules (listing all her names if necessary) and never had a problem with the IRS or anyone else. It's a name! Don't use it for evasion and stay true to you!
  • I am definitely apprehensive.  My new last name will start and end with the same letters of my first name (if that makes sense) and I think it's kind of hard to say!  But I sill want to take it.  Will definitely be mourning my own family name though.  It's a big change.
  • The only reason I'm nervous is that we're getting married in the middle of a school term, so I'm not sure how that will work with assignments and stuff. I need to look into postponing the name change for about 3 months so I can get through a school term and start switching names after it's done :S
