flight booking with name change

Our honeymoon isn't until two months after our wedding. By then, my name will have been changed and I'll have new ID and such. So my question is what to do about booking the flights.

If I book now using my current name, what will happen when we show up at the airport and my new name doesn't match my old one? Should I hold onto my old ID so they can see both and recognize that it is in fact me?

I can't really book the flights using my soon-to-be new name, because all my credit card and bank account information is obviously in my current name and it'd likely cause major issues.

TIA. :)

I wouldn't change your name until after you get back from the trip. Book everything in your maiden name and keep all your IDs and credit cards in that name, and then legally change it once you return.

  • It sounds like the easiest thing to do would be to wait and change your name after the HM. Your tickets, ID, passport, everything needs to have the same name.

  • Maybe you should wait to change your name until after the HM. Changing your name can take longer or shorter than you expect. I wouldn't count on it being all set by the time you leave for your HM two months later. It would probably be all set, but you never know, especially if you're waiting for an updated or a new passport.

As far as booking the tickets, it doesn't matter if it's your maiden name on the credit card when booking. The billing info doesn't have to match the ticket holder's info. What if my mom wanted to book a vacation as a gift to me and FI? It would be her credit card info booking the flights, but the names of the passengers would be me and FI.

I would just play it safe and wait to change your name until after you get back and book everything in your maiden name. That's what we did, I don't intend on changing my name until we get back from our HM. Just refer to yourself as "Mrs. New Last Name" in social situations.
  • Wait to do the name change. You have to wait to get your official marriage license anyway and they may take a couple of months. And btw, they will not let you keep your old ID, if you are referring to a driver's license. They will destroy the old one.

Actually, in MN you have to keep your old ID (which they clip) along with your copy of the new ID application papers until your new ID arrives.

Good call on waiting until after the HM. Hadn't even thought of that. Thanks ladies! Question = answered. :)
  • That's interesting, they don't give you the new ID then and there. Different.

In the four states I've gotten driver's licenses in, only one gave it to me there.  I think it's pretty common to have to wait.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: flight booking with name change : How odd.?  In the 4 states and one territory I've received DL I've gotten them right then and there.

it varies from state to state- some make you wait, others print them up right then and there. but either way, they punch out/clip the expiration date from your old DL, at which point they are no longer a vaild form of ID.
  • You can book your trip now under your future name.  There shouldn't be any problems with paying.  After all, people pay for other people's tickets all the time...  It's not that big of a deal ;)

But you'll have to make sure that your name will definitely be changed by then.  So just make sure you're secure about the timing of the name change ;)
