Dress Doesn't Fit

Do my dress finally came in so I was able to just go an try it on with all my accessories. Except after I left I kinda had a little meltdown... it didn't fit. It fits everywhere except in the bust, so we couldn't get it zipped up the last 6 inches. Am I over reacting, or is this something I should be worried about? I am on a diet, but I don't know what's going to happen if I can't lose weight! Anyone else have this problem or maybe some words of wisdom?

Re: Dress Doesn't Fit

  • How long do you have before your wedding?

I would talk to your seamstress to see if it would be possible to replace the zipper with a corset back, how much it would cost, and how long it would take.   Then try to lose weight between now and maybe 6 weeks before the wedding (or something that makes sense based on how long she thinks it will take).  Try the dress on again -- if it fits, great!  If not, then execute the corset-back plan.

  • Wedding is August 4... my first fitting is May 12 (I tried to get it later but the seamstress is out of town until June). I guess I could always push it back, but I'm moving a few weeks before the wedding and I really wanted the dress to be done before that.
  • How much do you think you'll have to lose to fit in the dress?  10 pounds?   I think that's perfectly achievable between now and May.   I would talk to your seamstress about the corset-back anyway just so there's a back-up plan.

Altertantively, is there any way they could even rush-order a dress in a size up and have it be in in time?  It may mean pushing your first fitting back a few weeks, but it might be worth the peace of mind.

  • It just is hard to tell how much I would need to lose because the dress fits everywhere else except the boobs! So whatever weight I would need to lose would need to come out of my bust size. Also one of my friend said I should have tried it without a bra... do you think that would help?
  • Breathe.  The same issue happened with me when my dress came in.  As with your situation, my zipper just would not go the last 6 inches.  I didn't have a meltdown because I knew going into it that my dress wouldn't fit (I was eating like crazy and being lazy...it was also during the holidays so that didn't help either).

After the fitting I knew that I needed to get my butt moving and to try to cut down on what I was eating.  I started to eat healthier but still allowed myself a treat or two so I didn't go completely crazy.  I also made a workout plan and stuck to it.  I knew that in the end being in better shape would not only get me in my dress but also make me feel better overall (more energy, happier, etc).

From the time I tried on my dress (mid-December) to the day of my wedding (mid July) I lost about 10 pounds.  My dress fit perfectly (actually only a hem and bustle were needed, no other alterations).

So if you start now I am sure you will be fine.  A good tip that I learned while working out...if I felt like I wanted to quit because I was tired, etc I kept repeating, out loud (I am sure people thought I was crazy but I didn't care) "wedding dress, wedding dress, wedding dress"...this kept me focused on why I was busting my butt.

    Good luck!

  • I know this is not the case with everyone but most of the people I know when they lose weight it comes off the bust first. So like PP said, you've got time. I'd try to lose about 10 pounds and it will probably work!

  • Thanks all! I plan on being more motivated in the next few months and especially with it warming up it should be much easier to get out of the house and move!
  • You have plenty of time to lose a few pounds to get the dress to zip!  And worst case scenario, even if you don't lose enough like PPs said you could have them try to let out the seams in the bust area or put a corset back in.  Win-win either way =]
