Re: MTV and aborition

  • I think after this special, people will blame MTV for glamourizing abortion the same way they glamourized teen pregnancy.

Although I don't see anything about 16 and Pregnant to be terribly glamourous.

  • MTV just sounds like vapid drivel to me, I dont know why people watch that crap. I feel like the scenario in idiocracy is already beginning...
  • I wonder if it's Amber deciding whether or not to have the abortion.

I wish they would just address this on 16 & Pregnant instead of having a separate special on it.  They show multiple girls having the baby and some giving it up for adoption.  Why not throw in a girl or two who is having an abortion?

  • I think the girls will get a lot of hate thrown their way by the crazies. I could be wrong.

  • I think it would be best if they did a special on PREVENTION instead of just how to deal with it after it happens.  They should do a '16 and pregnant' meets 'I wasn't stupid and learned to use birth control and now I'm in college living the life TEENAGERS were meant to' special and edit it to make the teen moms lives look like crap compared to the people who used birth control and prevented pregnancy.

*disclaimer- I think some of those teen moms (Maci) are actually doing quite well, but if you are going to promote prevention, you obviously have to make the alternative look like it's hell

I like this idea. They glamorize this show too much. I don't watch it though but I assume they do since it's in the mags a lot.

Seriously though, what is up with that chicks face. She has this weird puffy forehead no eyebrows look going on.

  • I commented about this on another board, where most of the posters were against it because of the backlash it might cause against the girl. This is my C&Ped answer:

I don't watch 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom, but I don't have a problem showing an abortion decision on television AT ALL. It's honestly one of the last taboo subjects on US television. The Canadian show Degrassi: The Next Generation (which is fictional) showed a character deciding to get an abortion in a two part episode, and the channel that shows the program in America only aired the first part of that storyline.

She won't be the first person to go on TV and publicly admit to an abortion or talk about it. Yes, it's VERY hard to do, so I wonder if she realizes all the consequences of doing so, but that's her decision. And if she already has a child and has been on the show, I'm assuming she's over 18 now.

I DO wish instead of a special which draws attention to OMG abortion in a sensationalistic way that they would just incorporate it into the show. In the first season, one girl on 16 and Pregnant gave up her baby for adoption. Why not simply show a 16 year old girl who decides to get an abortion? It's as much of a legitimate decision in that circumstance as adoption or keeping the baby.

  • How could you possibly think that having no eyebrows would be a good look?  I do know a girl who pulls her out but I'm pretty sure it's trichotillimania (sp?) but if you're shaving em off on purpose, I think you need to have your head examined.

Exactly.  I wish it wasn't treated as such a taboo subject.  I know it's a difficult decision to make, but it's something that should be discussed instead of being ignored.

  • I personally see no reason for them to not air the special. But, like others have said I wish they would just incorperate it into a regular episode of 16 and pregnant. The fact that it's a girl that was previously on the show and got knocked up again kind of irritates me. Makes me think she didn't learn her lesson the first time.

I would totally be a follower of "The Many Faces of Salt" blog.

Just in case you weren't aware...Not everyone who has had an abortion/gotten pregnant young is stupid.  I think it's pretty ignorant of you to say so. Birth control does happen to fail in certain circumstances.  It has nothing to do with being stupid.  Accidents happen.  It takes a lot more courage than you think to get an abortion.  It's not the easy way out as you may seem to think.  I just think it was wrong for you to generalize like that,

I agree with focusing on prevention and showing the real repercussions of dealing with babies/getting an abortion.  Nothing will change if everything is glamorized like it is now.
