Do you....

Ski or snowboard?
Have  you ever tried the other?
Why do you like ski/snowboarding better than the other?

I'm going for the first time tomorrow, which should I do?

Re: Do you....

  • Snowboard!
  • I was always a skiier.  I tried snowboarding and hated it.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I ski.  I love it.  I wish I lived closer to better skiing;  the snow in NC sucks.

I've never wanted to snowboard because snowboarders are always on their butts.  Seems to me that if it's that hard to stay up and moving, I'm not interested.  I also find it annoying how they sit at the top of a hill and completely block passage past the ramp at the lift, so if you do decide to snowboard, please don't do that.

  • I tried skiing once and I couldn't keep my skis apart.  But I'm a klutz.  I kept tripping over myself.  I found snowboard to be easier since I don't HAVE to keep anything apart.  I did spend a lot of time on my butt the first couple times I went, and I was sore as heck, but it was still more fun than when I tried skiing.
  • I have done both and prefer snowboarding.  When I skiied I never really caught on to the whole side to side thing so I always flew straight down.  I love snowboarding, though!!  I actually hated snowboarding when I first tried though, mainly because I rented the equipment and it was so uncomfortable.  Once I bought my own snowboard, boots, and bindings it was MUCH BETTER!

  • I've only skiied before. Originally I wanted to try to snowboard, but I love skiing so much that everytime I make it to the mountains, I just do that. Snowboarders spend too much time on their butts and smoke too much pot. ;-)

Kidding. I think you are more mobile with skiing. Each foot can move independently. I've heard snowboarding is REALLY different, because not only are your feet planted, but you're moving sideways. So if you start off skiing, snowboarding seems counter-intuitive at first.

TAKE LESSONS, though. They are sooo helpful when you're first starting. I didn't ski until I was 15 or so, and I wish I'd started when I was about 5. It would make the learning process so much easier...

  • My FI loves to snowboard and I had only skiied a couple of times as a kid so he tried to teach me to snowboard last year and it was only one day and it was a disaster, haha.  By the end of the day, if I hit my tailbone one more time I was going to puke.
Also, if you snowboard, just be prepared for your ass to be bruised (literally, I didn't know you could get bruises like that) and your arms to get really tired from pushing yourself up over and over again.  I kept getting really frustrated because at the end of the day my arms were too tired for me to even get myself upright again.  I may try again this year because I know it takes more than one day, but I may just wuss out and do skis.
Oh and another thing (sorry this is long!) I like the fact that you can fall sideways on skis, but with a snowboard you just slam down either face first or ass first, it's a rougher fall in my experience.

  • I really want to learn to surf, but live in Wisconsin, so I snowboard instead.

I've done both skiing and snowboarding.  Skiing is much easier to learn.  The main difference is getting to learn the feel- Snowboards don't let your feet move individually, so it's a much different feel and easier to fall in the beginning.  I would start with skiing if you've never done either.
  • Mrsjessie-ive hear you cant just "sit/fall down" on a ski but you can on a snowboard. Is that not true? I hope not cause that me super scared.

And FI and teaching me. He skiied for 15ish years and has been snowbarding for 5. He likes snowboarding more though.

  • I used to snowboard, and I loved it, though I haven't done it in a few years.  My one piece of advice that no one has give yet----please, please wear a helmet.  You can buy them for $100, and some ski hills let you rent them.  FI's sister learned that the hard way freshmen year of college, so please wear one :(

  • I have never even seen/touched snow.

Well, I did see it from a distance (eg. on mountain tops in Zurich, Munich and Wyoming) but haven't actually been close to it. I hope to rectify that this year, though.
