Electric bills suck.

Re: Electric bills suck.

  • Thanks Hcc- I was actually on my way to their website to see what my peak times are. I always do all the laundry on saturday (or sometimes sunday) and I worry that its eating up my bill
  • Oh yeah.  Arizona.  Duh.  NM about that.  We slept with the AC on last night because it was really hot.  Haha.  Arizona I could only imagine.  I'd be bitchy all the time if I was there.  I get so grumpy when I get hot for no good reason (like working out).

Yeah blowers take a lot of electricity.  You don't even want to know what a salon pays for hydro and power.  Plus you need AC cause it get so hot in there because of the blowers constantly going.

  • Oh and I forgot to mention, when our roommate moved out, our bills went down crazy amounts.  She washed and blow dried her hair every day.  Where as I only wash my hair every 2 or 3 days and generally only blowdry on the weekends.  I let it air dry at night.  So, yeah when she moved out, I realized what an impact just one person makes.

  • Yea, Arizona heat makes normal living unbearable.
I typically just wash my hair every other day, unless I go swimming...
I know the bill would be a lot less if T didn't live there because the tv wouldn't be on much and the air would be turned up...but, he's got to stay haha
  • I read that it helps to turn the fan part on your ac to auto instead of on- i just tried this, so I am not sure if it helps yet.

Hmm, I always wondered what would happened if I switched it to fan...
  • Love- if you moved here you could commit to the icecold showers. You'd just have to make sure you went outside for a bit first, then it feels great. Then again, the water doesn't get very cold in the summer...
  • I think a few people already mentioned this, but the biggest thing that made an impact for our bills was a programmable thermostat.  My 600 square foot apartment didn't have one and my bills were higher living there than it is on our house, which is around 2,200 square feet downstairs (we don't turn on the 2nd floor A/C currently).

We set it to 82 when we're at work, and 79 when we're at home.  For me, having the house at 79 during the summer in Texas doesn't keep the house as cool as I would like, but considering this last month's bill was only $110 for gas and electric, I'll suffer a little bit to keep the costs down.

I have a programmable thermostat, and I have it set to 80 during the day when no one is home and then down to 78 when I get home and to 74 when we go to bed. The weekends it's a little cooler during the day because we're at home more. I think it makes a big difference.

ETA: And other people say so as well.

this exactly. and here in Houston, we have a humid heat. it SUCKS. our 2100 sf house uses about $200 in electricity per month in the summers.

  • OP - we have SRP and use the Time of Use plan. It's worked so far this year. We're cutting our cost from last year. We also have a timed thermostat so I program it to stay at 85 all day long then about an hour before I get home I set it to blast some cool air so its not unbearable when I get home. We also try to grill outside as much as possible (even in the 80,000 degree weather). Turning on the stove or oven means that we have to crank the A/C to cool down the house.

Just keep repeating to yourself - I live here for the winters, I live here for the winters.
