Cake vs Cupcakes

I am trying to decide between having a cake or making cupcakes. The theme  of my wedding is a small  family gathering with a Scottish theme . some details are my mother is making my maid of honor's dress and I am making mine and my daughter's . My FI's aunt is willing to help with the Kilts .  our wedding is going to have a max of 30 people . so any help would be nice :) thank you . I truly have no idea what I am going to do  neither my FI or I have been to a wedding ever .

It's totally a matter of preference.  Me, I wanted the traditional grand white wedding cake.  But as a guest, I'd be just as happy with a cupcake.

Since you are having such a small wedding, cupcakes might be the way to go.  Most wedding cakes are sooo big and you end up with a ton left over.  If you have cupcakes, definitely have different flavors if you can.  So I voted cupcakes with a twist.

I did as well.  I think offering a variety of cupcakes is a good way to please different palates.

Personally I'm having cake at our wedding reception, but it's completely non-traditional. I'm getting married in a dress that's definitely not traditional and the cake will match it colorwise,  however we're also going ahead and including beach elements like seashells and sand dollars because we're getting married right by the beach...I've also arranged with our baker to do a small groom's cake that features wolves and dragons but the FI doesn't know that yet - it's going to be a day of surprise!

This is my dress, it's going to be floor length on me though because even after cutting off 6-8 inches my short little self still won't be as tall as this model is! That and I'm not wearing heels since I'd fall down the aisle and would prefer to keep wedding day humiliation to a minimum if at all possible.

The tiers of our wedding cake are going to be the claret, ivory then claret again - the ivory layer will have a black satin ribbon wrapped around it to compliment the black suits the guys are wearing. But again what you choose is up to you because ultimately this is a day for YOU and your FI, nobody else....What do you guys want for cake or do you even really want cake?

we want cake, but  it is really expensive, and for that few of people  were looking at price :)

I voted for cupcakes because of the number of people that you are planning on having.

I'm getting a cake, and I just had my consultation with a cake baker. The bottom tier of my cake alone feeds 90 people, that's three times your guest list. The only way you could do a cake for 30 people would be to only have one layer, which probably is not the look you are going for at a wedding. 30 cupcakes can be arranged on a cupcake stand to mimic the multiple-tiered look of a wedding cake. If you go cupcakes, as PP's have said, I would go different flavors to satisfy different palettes.

If you really want a cake, you could always have cupcakes for your guests and a small single tier (6" or so) for you and your new hubby to cut, then you have the best of both worlds.

I have heard some girls say that cupcakes were as much as a regular cake but I would think for your size wedding that would not be the case.  Lots of girls do cupcakes so if that is more economical then do it.  It will be just fine.

I vote cake because cupcakes generally lack my favourite part about cakes... the filling!

Ladies, there is such a thing as a small 2 or 3 tiered wedding cake to serve only 30-35 guests!

This decision is all yours and your FI's, dear.  YOU have to decide what YOU want: a traditional-looking small tiered cake, or the more casual feel of a cupcake tower?

IMO, If you are doing a Scottish theme, I would really try to incorporate that theme into one of your dessert choices, if possible...whether it be a traditional Scottish cake in cupcake form, or a Scottish theme design on a small tiered cake.

Your wedding sounds very unique, and I'm sure whatever you decide, your guests will thoroughly enjoy the day!

i like all dessert, so i'm not a lot of help. however, my cousin had a very small wedding, and they did the cupcakes in different flavors. it was a huge crowd pleaser! people were cutting and splitting them and it went over well. so i voted for that option, but really, i think any one you choose will be great! good luck!

Thank you all  soo much, :)   i am so happy with all of the answers, the reason I did a poll is because i think it is kinda tacky to ask my guests what they would prefer, thank you all :)

You could order a cupcake stand that has a top tier to hold an 8" cake.   The place I ordered mine from does custom orders.

If you want a scotish theme, they can make it!

We made cupcakes for our 130 guests.  We boxed them and used them as centerpieces.  People were then free to eat them there at the wedding, or take them home (which we got so many compliments on!)

I voted that you were on your own, which sounds snarky (and I really didn't mean it to be), but there seems to be a lot of emotion attached to wedding cakes (hey--food is love), and I don't think I can answer that question for you.  Cost is usually a factor, and it's very sweet to consider what your guests would prefer, but what do YOU want?  I wanted a big cake, so I had one.  My husband likes fruit pies (not a cake fan), so we had those too.  My family is Italian, so we had cannolis.  And everybody likes cookies, so we had lots of those too.  In the end, we had this massive dessert buffet with a big cake right in the middle.  Pretty sure even people without diabetes needed a little extra insulin that night, because that buffet was DESTROYED.  I guess people want their cake and their pie (and cookies and candy and cannolis) too.  Variety is great, so if you go the cupcake route, different types of cupcakes would go over really well.

Just a thought:  how complicated is your family tartan?  You could get some colored fondant and recreate it with strips of fondant.  Then use a round cookie cutter, and you have a super-personalized topper for cupcakes.  Or wrap a round cake or cupcakes with tartan ribbon.

I always prefer the traditional grand wedding cake.. it's a centerpiece of the reception. I've never attended a wedding reception with cupcakes, but wouldn't complain if they had them instead of cake. Cupcakes just remind me a of a kid's birthday party and aren't as formal in my opinion.
