We did the father/daughter and mother/son dance at the same time, but we used Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole. It's fairly current and was nice and upbeat, but also it wasn't too specific gender-wise which was important since we did both dances to the same song.

We are starting out with a slow song and having it cut into "Play that funky music". My dad picked that song and it's a really upbeat, fun song.

"Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon is absolutely perfect IMO. It's upbeat and nothing but happy, but the lyrics will still get some people teary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzMh7zHir1I

I suck at dancing so I can't attest to the dance-ability of this song, but damn do I love Paul Simon.

We ended up choosing Surfer Girl by the Beach Boys since my dad used to sing that to me when I was little. We also thought about doing Brown Eyed Girl.
