Non-Matching Bridesmaids & Groomsmen?

Just as a clarification, my wedding is going to be a "galactic" themed wedding.  Meaning it will have touches throughout of superhero things, and even some Star Wars stuff.  Our wedding colors are red & blue (with some hints of yellow like in the flowers) as Superman is me and my guy's favorite superhero.  Our original idea was to have the bridesmaids in blue dresses, and the groomsmen with red in their tuxes (haven't decide what type of tie they would wear, or if they would have a vest, etc).  However, do you think having such different colors on them would look too weird, even if those were the colors of our wedding?  I've hastily pasted a picture of a girl in a blue bridesmaids dress next to a guy at a wedding wearing a tux with a red tie & vest next to each other in Paint, but I just can't decide if it looks ok or not.  What are yall's thoughts?  Thanks!!

Re: Non-Matching Bridesmaids & Groomsmen?

  • It might look more coordinated to bring in the red somewhere on the bridesmaids' side, maybe with sashes on the dresses and/or in the flowers if you didn't already think of that.  Hints of yellow would be pretty in red flowers.  I went to a wedding once where the girls wore chocolate brown gowns and the guys wore black tuxes with orange vests and ties.  There was orange ribbon tied around the pink flowers the girls carried but it was so subtle that it didn't look like things were tied together.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • While I'm a huge fan of Superman, Star Wars, and injecting some boldness, whimsy, or sprezzatura into my attire, I think you need to reconsider this look.

I'm not against theme weddings...in fact, I attended the Lord of the Rings themed wedding of two of my closest college friends several years ago. They went full-out with costumes, botanical garden setting, bridge-over-stream setup evocative of Rivendell...it was awesome. The Groom was Aragorn and the Bride was Arwen. None of the guests griped or poked fun at the theme, since the wedding party committed to it boldly and confidently. Choose your theme and ROCK IT.

In your case: what's your theme? Is it Star Wars or Superman? I think you'll need to choose one or the other- narrow your focus or risk losing both. As a fan of both franchises, I know it can be difficult to choose one over the other, but I think you need to here- they're just too different be fall under the umbrella "Galactic" theme. Unless your theme is: "Stuff we really dig."

A note on the tuxedos: adding "Superman Red" into the tuxedos through ties/waistcoats/cummerbunds is tacky and, as stated in this forum by many other posters many times, "prom-ish." Tuxedos are formal and should be worn as such. Injections of color should be modest and look best surrounded by the tuxedo fabric color (black, midnight blue, or ivory). A tuxedo is most appropriately worn with a black tie and black waistcoat or cummerbund. Perhaps a pocket square can provide the color tie-in you're looking for (these are a hoot for a Star Wars theme)? Also, have you considered a themed cufflink? There are plenty of Superman ones available on the market. Amazon.com is your friend here.

Bottom line: inject some modest color and be suggestive of your chosen theme- don't turn your wedding party into a gimmick, unless you're going the Full Monty and will actually dress them up in full costume like the Justice League or Sith Lords (A Jedi wedding wouldn't make much sense, since the Jedi Code doesn't allow for marriage. Go Sith or go home.).

  • So you have reed, yellow and blue in a galactic theme incorporating both Star Wars and Superman and the item that concerns you is whether bridesmaids in blue dresses will look odd next to groomsmen with red accents.

You have theme overload.  Pick either Star Wars or Superman.

If the bridesmaids have red flowers and the groomsmen have blue boutineers then you have linked both halves so that they coordinate with each other.   It could easily come across as childish so a careful hand at editting the look is needed.

If you pick the superman theme, I would put every one in same bright blue and use the red and yellow in vivid flowers.  Vests on the groomsmen would up the elegant factor.    Pick up printed superman tshirts as a gift for the groomen and get the fun picture of the guys running to save the day my taking off the ties and opening their shirts.

  • Didnt get a link to the pasted pic, but my dh is a superman fanatic!! We are not making our wedding about superman..but he doesnt know that I plan to have his grooms cake made of justice league characters/DC (i can never remember who allies and enemies..gotta check) & I and plan to have as surprise pic with the groomsmen opening the shirts to show a superman shirt underneath..enough of a touch, but not overkill... I think youll be ok with the gm wearing red.. I agree with a red sash for the bm..and I think the yellow flowers with red ribbon around the stems..or red flowers with yellow ribbon..or combine them red and yellow flowers..i think that those options would tie everything together..

  • I did a red and blue themed baseball wedding. I agree that you ahae to narrow down what kind of theme you want. You can still have a non-tacky themed wedding, but like a PP said, you need to own it!
Sometimes I felt like it there were too many colors (because I also had the jr BMS in red) so I offset that with the guys only having color in their ties (they had black vests).
