Minnesota-Minneapolis and St. Paul

Married Ladies... Help with name change stuff!

OK, I know this has probably been asked a million times & I thought I saved those threads, but can't find them now.  So here we go...

I'm finding conflicting answers to this one... Do I go to the St. Paul or Minneapolis Social Security office, to change my SS card?

I need my old SS card, DL, marriage certificate with raised seal & birth certificate... Anything else I'm missing?

I think that's all for now...  Thanks ladies!  = )

I lied... I thought of something else!

Do I need to wait until I have my new SS card, to go to the DMV & get my new DL??

    TIA!

You need to go to the Minneapolis location to change your SS card. They don't handle them at the other location. When I was there all I had with me was my marriage license, SS card, and old DL. They didn't ask for my brith certificate, but I may have just lucked out. And yes, you are right in that you should get your new name clear with the federal govt (SS office) before changing your stuff with your DL.

Actually, it toooootally doesn't matter whether you change your DL first or your Social Secuirty Card. In fact, I'd actually recommend doing the DL first, because it's usually easier (you can go into any DMV and all you need is your current license and your marriage certificate) and it's going to take 4 weeks for you to even get the new license back anyway.

Other than that, everything GS said was accurate :-)

what Maybe said - I changed my DL first because it just worked out better for me to swing by there on my way to the SS office.  Then I went right down to the SS office afterwards - easy peasy.  (I could do the St. Paul office back then but it sounds like that has changed since I got married!)I didn't need my birth certificate for anything.  The only thing I could htink of using it for would be applying for a brand spanking new, never had one before, passport.

Random side note, if you already have a passport and are changing it to your new name, you have to send your certified copy of your marriage certificate in with your application.   You will get it back.  I got stuff back in 3 envelopes (govt efficiency - ugh!  lol).  The first was my old passport, the second was my marriage license, the third was my new passport.  I had a panic attack when my first envelope came and it wasnt holding my only copy of my marriage certificate!!

I just went and did all this yesterday so here it goes. They are right that you have to go to the Minneapolis SS Card office on Chicago Ave to do the card change. I did this first and I only brought my passport and my certified marriage license. Then on my way home from work I swung through the DMV and did my license. They said name changes are running about 6 weeks right now.... Next stop for me is the bank, they told me that they would just need to see the official license. Then once I get the bank done I will do the whole mail in the passport business. I tried to do it at the DMV yesterday but the lady at the front desk said I would save $25 by doing the mail-in route... I guess it is good to save money but I don't think I will save that much by the time I pay for postage to get all the bundle of paperwork together to mail. I am now going to see if I can start my official work name change stuff... I already have new business cards and a name plate but my email address needs to be changed.

Be careful at the bank.  The first time I went I had my new SS and my marriage license but my new driver's license hadn't come yet.  They told me to come back when I had my new license and said I'd need that with my SS.  Umm so I went back didn't have my marriage license with me that time.  Well turns out I needed that too!  FML my bank doesn't have a lot of branches so it's kind of a PITA to get there during their hours.

Moral of the story....bring everything :) just in case!
