MGs and Non-MGs: Your favorite and least favorite registry items?

FI and I just started our first registry today at BB&B (thanks to everyone who recommended the Totowa store - it was HUGE).  Now I have some more questions for you though...

1.  What are/were your favorite items on the registry that you just can't live without and would recommend for everyone to have?

2.  What did you register for and receive, but realize now that you shouldn't have registered for it because it's a waste and/or you never use it?

3.  Any other suggestions or advice about registry items?

    1.  What are/were your favorite items on the registry that you just can't live without and would recommend for everyone to have?

So much stuff.  I loved our china, our everyday plates, our silver and flatware, our stemware, our pots and pans and our knives, beer tub, wine fridge.  So a lot of the big-ticket items :)  There were a bunch of small or more expensive things that I love -- like our grated cheese server, our rabbit wine opening set, our wine cooler...

One of my favorite things was a vase from Tiffany's (the Windham vase).  Sadly, it got broken when we moved this year (stay away from Flat Rate Movers!)

    2.  What did you register for and receive, but realize now that you shouldn't have registered for it because it's a waste and/or you never use it?

There's a lot of stuff that I like and love having but don't use much.  So I won't mention that stuff here.  Coffee maker and tea kettle would be the biggest wastes to me.  Neither of us drink coffee or tea, and so the thinking behind them was that they would be used when we have dinner parties.  We don't have those, and they've never been used.  But they aren't big ticket items that we wouldn't buy ourselves, so we should have waited for a change of lifestyle before getting them.

    3.  Any other suggestions or advice about registry items?

As long as you have a good variety of items on your registry, don't be afraid of registering for things if you want them.  Your friends and family want to buy you fancy, fun, impractical things, so don't be afraid to register for those.

We haven't used a lot of our registry items yet, because we are saving them for when we buy our first home so we have a "fresh start." Especially because FIL lives with us right now, so we felt like saving most things will help us get the real newlywed feeling.

    1. I am glad that we got: Kitchenaid stand mixer, wine fridge for MH's craft beers, bar towels/dish towels, stovetop griddle, tongs, vacuum and dustbuster, nice set of knives

    2. I wish we hadn't gotten: a TON of drinking glasses, placemats, coasters (my mom did a bar-themed wishing well at my shower, so we have more coasters and wine charms than we know what to do with). We didn't register for fine china or crystal and I don't miss not having that.

    3. Keep in mind how much space you have to store things, and what you will actually use vs. what you plan to put away for later. Also, remember that you can always buy yourselves certain things with the gift cards or cash that you will most likely receive. And you will probably have no problem going to the store and buying yourselves the tablecloth that you didn't get, but you probably won't buy yourselves something like china or high-quality bedsheets when you have a house and a family to pay for. A coworker told me that about her china ... "If you don't let people buy it for you now, you'll probably never get it."

I have to agree with mbcdefg, when I attend showers and see like, 10 sets of glasses (8 red wine, 8 white wine, 8 tumblers, etc etc etc) I think it's a pretty big waste. I especially think it's a waste when the glasses are pretty expensive.

As mentioned, just put a variety of items on there that you would actually use. You'll probably get more use out of a toaster than a deviled egg plate - but if you've always wanted a deviled egg plate but didn't want to buy it for yourself, then now is the time to register for it. (That sounded horrible, but I guess it's true)

I'd also be mindful of prices as you register. Figure what the average shower guest would probably buy - say it's $50. If you register for multiple sets of flatware for $50 a set, there is a good chance they will all be purchased. If you register for flatware at $150 a set, then it probably won't.  Have some big ticket items for close relatives/group gifts, but also have a fair amount of mid-range items that one guest alone could purchase.

Oh I figured out my least favorite.  It was the flatware to go with my china.  No one bought it and I eventually removed it.  I didnt want it to begin with.

I am really really wanting the Dyson Animal we registsred for.  I am stalking to see if it comes off.
Although I havent had my shower yet, I constantly go on and change things.  I just deleted the panini maker.  FI was right we will never use it.  So bye bye it goes.
Listen when they say to register for a lot of stuff.  the girls on here are proof that people are so generous at showers.

Love my china, crystal, and pots and pans set.  Also the Rabbit corkscrew, it's awesome.

I registered for a lot of kitchen knickknacks I probably won't use...a mandolin slicer, etc.

I have to disagree w/ people who think china and multiple glasses are a waste. I think that 100% depends on lifestyle. I LOVE to host big dinner parties so for me china and red/white/water glasses are important. I set a full table w/ the china, glassware, napkins (cloth) and I enjoy it, however I know thats not everyone's taste.

My favorite gadgets are my kitchenaid stand mixer, and my cusinart ice cream maker I've made a new flavor every week this summer! I also love my le creuset stuff but since its summer I haven't gotten much use out of it. I haven't used my slow cooker but I'm excited about that too.

MH and I were pretty selective with our registry. Not to mention I stalked it like crazy and was constantly making updates. We actually took a few days to focus on things around our house that we had or didn't have and made a list of things to add or take off of our registry. We love our every day plates, pots and pans set, the rabbit corkscrew, and our bedroom set.

I think things that we don't need or use often does depend on the person. We only got 2 place settings of our china and decided not to buy the rest. We won't use it often (maybe holidays) and my mom offered to give us hers. We also got so many drinking glasses that for us it is a waste. We returned a lot of them. We also realized we don't need every kind of maker out there, panini, forman, etc. After realizing a forman grill can also be a panini press we took a lot of those items off.
