  hello!!
  nyc is the center of the universe!! im in loveeee with nyc!!
  if you want to be in the nightlife part and where everythings at - i recommend to stay on broadway or times square: ive stayed at the marriot marquis and the W. the W is super cool and it has a popular local bar in the hotel.
  if you want a romantic hotel: no other place than the new york palace hotel across from st. patricks cathedral.
  you can stay on park avenue or greenwich village too..but you would need a cab to get everywhere.
  YOU MUST make reservations at Carmine's - its a family style italian restaurant and its to die for!!!!!! Dean and Deluca is amazing for breakfast!!

  As a former New Yorker who was transplanted to California and misses NYC terribly, these are the things I would do if I went back:
  
  1.  Lunch one day at Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.  Best shakes, best burgers, soo tasty.  Try going on an off hour during the week to avoid the often loooong line.  Sit outside and people watch afterward.
  
  2.  Staten Island Ferry ride in the evening outside in August... gorgeous.  So lovely to see NYC and enjoy the breeze.  So easy and cheap too-- subway fare ($2-- maybe a little more now...), that is it!
  
  3.  The Met one day, because it is so lovely and cool and relaxing to be there.
  
  4.  Central Park Zoo is fun and romantic.  Its relatively inexpensive, has great animals, and is a cute little trip. 
  
  5.  Union Square Farmers Market-- best one (but also most crowded) is on Saturday, but there are also weekday ones.  Beautiful produce, especially at the end of august, flowers, and other tasty treats abound.  Pick up some fresh bread, artisan cheese, fruit and a bottle of wine and picnic it either in Union Square or hop on the subway and picnic in Central Park.
  
  6.  Shakespear in the Park.  TOTALLY WORTH getting up at 6am to wait in line.  You meet people, hang out, enjoy the weather, and attend free A+ theater later in the evening under the stars.  You even get to star-gaze (the hollywood type that is... we sat behind Kathleen Turner the last time we went!)
  
  Those are just some of the things I would do.  It is such a fun place.  To me, the best thing about NYC is that it is a different place for every person who loves it.  You can totally make it your own.  Have so much fun! I'm so jealous!

  I'm a NEW YORKER!!! I love New York. I was born and raised their, and now I'm STUCK in Pennsylvania haha. You're gonna have so much fun, there is so much to do! If you're into the romantic thing, go to the NY Botanical Gardens : http://www.nybg.org/
  
  Go spend some time in Central Park, the Central Park Zoo. Go see some art museums, like the MET or the Museum of Natural History. Go see a show! There's TONS of shows out right now that even hubby would enjoy. Go to the top of the Empire State building.... there's so much fun stuff to do, you won't know what to do with yourself! But I definitely recommend the NY Botanical Gardens. VERY romantic HAVE FUN!

  I live in NYC and am a tourist in my own city every weekend.
  
  Go to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) instead of the Empire State Building.  I personally think it has better views and the lines don't seem as long. At the bottom you can get a cupcake from Magnolia Bakery, famous because of Sex in the City.
  
  Take the hop on hop off bus tour.  I did this with my parents when they visited me and thought it was really interesting and informative.  You get to see the entire city and get on and off the bus as much as you want.  This is a good thing to do on your first day so that you can see where everything is.
  
  Take a cruise around Manhattan.  This is fun during the day or at night, great views and you get to be out on the water.  Or take the Staten Island Ferry for free.  Great views of lower Manhattan and Statue of Liberty.
  
  Central Park - You can spend hours exploring the paths and people watching.  Walk into the park up away from the crowds (and smelly horses) that stay mostly around the lower loop. You can even rent a bike to ride around the whole park (about 6 miles).
  
  Restaurants - So many good little restaurants in the West Village. I agree with the Shake Shack recommendation. Try to avoid restaurants in Times Square because they are American chains that are not as good as local restaurants.
  
  You'll be here during the first week of the US Open (tennis).  Its super easy to get to by subway.

  totally agree with the native new yorkers here as i am also one myself. and totally totally totally agree with shake shack...best burger you'll ever have! if you really wanna do something different...take the subway to citifield, go to a mets (baseball) game and get shake shack there!!
  
  otherwise, have fun and be a tourist...take in central park and all there is to see, go to all of the museums, take the cityline tour, go to the statue of liberty, and see a few broadway shows. also do wake up for shakespeare in the park like another reader suggested. if your hotel isnt already booked, you can also split it up if you wanted to stay in different areas of the city. depending on your budget and what you're looking for, i totally agree with whomever suggested the new york palace...it's in an amazing location, within easy walking distance of 5th avenue and all of the finest shopping, as well as st patricks cathedral and rockefellar plaza.  if you want to go even higher end, there's always the peninsula right on 5th ave also.
   
  if you want to switch up the scene and location, i would then suggest switching hotels after maybe half of your trip to the hotel gaansevoort in the meatpacking district which is the lower west side. you'll feel like you're in a totally different city. there are the hottest restaurants, bars, and clubs down there, and they're all on cobblestone streets. it is my favorite area of the city because you feel like you're in a different world!! it's also more convenient to the east and west villages and downtown.  have fun and if you need anything else, feel free to ask!

  I also lived in NYC  for many years but recently moved to London, but I miss it!
  
  Central  Park is a must!  A romantic activity on a nice day (pick a weekday to avoid crowds) is to rent a row-boat and row around.  It does not cost that much and it is great fun!  This is near the Bethesda Fountain in the center of the park and there is a cafe nearby where you can get drinks or food.  Check out the CP park website for info.
  
  Great burgers at Shake Shack or Burger Joint in the Le Parker Meridian Hotel.  Good Cupcakes at Crumbs (locations all over  the city).  Cool upscale pastries on the Upper East Side at Lady M Cakes.  Other good places to eat or drink:  Sushi Samba, Jane, Katz Deli (When Harry Met Sally diner spot), Lillies near Union Square.
  
  Romantic/Splurge restaurant is The River Cafe in Brooklyn.  Amazing food, great service, and awesome views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.  An experience to remember.
  
  A Walk over Brooklyn Bridge is good fun and the parks on the Brooklyn side are lovely.  DUMBO (Down under Brooklyn Bridge) is a great area to explore.
  
  Museums or sights to check out MOMA (museum of Modern Art), the Met  (roof garden on a good weather day)or the Cloisters, Tenement Museum, Grand Central.
