NWR: Puppy Name Help!

Hey everyone....I need your help!

As most of you know, we are getting Carter a puppy for Christmas. He/she (we will be picking which one next week) will be a teddy bear puppy. Carter has referred to this dog as Sugar for a while now. But I am second guessing naming the dog Sugar. I am worried that it is too femanine. I dont want Carter to be embarassed of naming his dog Sugar when he gets older. I am not completely sure if we will change it....  but if we do, we need to think of a new name and fast!

So what are some dog names for a girl and a boy that you guys love?

  • Can you email the breeder and request a girl?

Have you decided where you are going to keep "sugar" until Christmas?

Haha my sister's boyfriend LOVES the name Riley and if they have kids together, wants to name the first Riley (whether it's a girl or a boy).

My sister HATES that idea. So when FI and I get a dog she wants us to name it Riley because then it would be "taken". She can't name her child the same thing as a dog.

I actually like it for a dog name :)

  • When I get a dog I'm naming it Cooper. I think it's a cute dog name. I also think Sugar is cute but I see your concerns. Maybe once he gets Sugar and if Sugar is a boy you could gently suggest a different name? After getting that book he may want to name him Petey the puppy!!

Petey would be cute :) I like Ode too!!

I just asked Carter if it would be ok if Santa brough him a puppy with a different name. He said he just wants a puppy with any name haha!

I also really like Cooper for a dog name. My brothers friends always called him Koop in high school so then I became Little Koop.

We havent decided if we want a girl or boy yet. We are going to decide based on personality. :)

We are going to get Sugar on Christmas Eve day before church while Carter plays at my parents house. Then have Sugar in the crate under the tree when we get home from church.

Meg- I'll have to check there out!  I don't think I've ever heard of this kind before.  We were looking at a goldendoodle but they can't guarantee that it would be REALLY curly and they are expensive!  He never was allergic as a kid either and when he went away to college, he became allergic.  Thankfully there are dogs that are hypoallergenic.

  • i also think sugar is a cute name and i think there is something endearing about getting a pet when you're little and naming.  for the rest of carter's childhood and the dog's life, it would be a memory-he may be embarrassed but i think he might think it's funny (or just cute), also.  i've never named a pet before i got them.  i kind of wanted to find out the personality of the animal first.  maybe it would be fun if the puppy had no name and carter (and y'all) could pick a name together after you get home from church.

  • I have had a dog named Ginger, Daphne Lu, Jake, my sister has a Guinevere (English bulldog), fi and I's puppy I's named Axel. We considered Leo, Jax, Oscar, Rolf, Oliver, Cole, jasper. If we got a female we like Delilah, Rosie, grace or Gracie, Lucy, Abbey. In my opinion when it comes to naming anyone/thing it's one of those you have took look at what your naming in order to know which one fits. Good luck!

  • Our childhood dog's name is Ellie. It's not the most whatever name either (but she is a girl), and my brother loves her just as much (probably more) at 19 as he did when he was 8.
  • Candy related names pop into my head when you say he wanted Sugar but you're thinking less feminine... Snickers, Skittles (I think that's cute), Hershey, Cocoa/Coco, Twizler (fun but hard to say for a little guy!)....

I like the names [some are male some are female]: Lilly, Roxie (that's my puppy's name, teehee), Kira, Snuggles, Pip, Tuppence, Paisely, Jojo, Tinker Bell (Tink), Pixie, Rocky, Baloo (since Baloo on Jungle Book is a bear and the dog is a teddy bear breed?), Teddy, Buddy, Elmo.....

I'd say pick about three names and let Carter choose which one, or have three in mind and pick one by the time he asks. That way you can have some leeway for personality but still have some direction.

Oh, also sometimes macho names are cute for little fluffy boy dogs. Think about Captain, Sarge, Thor, Apollo, or Bear.

  • My parents have a teddy bear! My dad bought it for my Mom after she was diagnosed with cancer.  My mom named her Callie (my mom loved the Callalilly flowers).  The name definitely suits the dog!

My FI and I just bought a red lab puppy and we named him Benelli (after a shot gun, my FI wants him to be a hunting dog).

    Otherwise I like:
Nora or Fionna for a girl and Max, Gus, and Charlie for a boy.

Let us know what you decide! :)

You're right!  Dogs are expensive!  I'm wondering if adoption would be better???

P.S I have always wanted a husky!!  We found a breeder in Nebraska that has Toy Huskies!!!  They were soooo cute.  But I don't think that she liked the idea of shipping one because she never returned my phone calls after the 1st time!  I am on the small side too- 5'2" so a small to medium dog is what I would love.  I did check out those terriers you mentioned.  I showed it to FI and told him they were hypoallergenic!  I think us waitinig until the summer would be the best time to get a puppy because I am a teacher.  With the summer off, I will have plenty of time to train it!  We'll see what happens!!  :) Thanks for all the info!

I think the summer would be a great time.  My Mom is waiting til she retires to get a dog (I think) because she doesn't have time for one even on the weekends (also a teacher) and said if she got one before she retired, it'd be the beginning of the summer for the same reasons. :)

  • Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!! We have decided that Sugar is NOT too femanine and it will be really cute and special to say that Carter named the dog when he was three. We are going to write a letter from Santa and have it explain that the puppy likes the names Sugar, Sophie, and ____(TBD) unless its a boy, then it will  be Sugar, ___ and___. We will let Carter decide from there. He has been calling his future dog Sugar for a long time, but we want to give him some options to be sure he really wants Sugar.
