What's your favorite...

I'm in the process of registering, but since FI and I have both lived in apartments with crappy roommates, neither of us owns nice kitchen stuff.  We've done some online research as to what brands/models may be good for our needs, but I love to hear what others use and love (or hate) w/o weeding out planted reviews.

Does anyoene want to recommend a line of pots/pans, a rice maker, and a crockpot?

Thanks!

Re: What's your favorite...

  • You don't need both a crockpot & a ricemaker.  Many items will double in functionality.

<div>I disagree. I use my rice cooker all the time, and rarely use my crock pot. The rice maker will turn off when it the rice is done and has other settings for rice if you have a nicer one. Unless there are crock pots with a specific rice setting (and there could be, I don't know), these two appliances have very different uses. </div><div>
</div><div>Unfortunately I'm at work and can't remember my rice cooker brand. </div><div>
</div><div>ETA: My stainless steel cookware is Calphalon TriPly which I highly recommend.  </div>

  • There are some out there that double.  You just have to look for them.
  • I LOVE my Calphalon Unison non stick. I'm too impatient to cook low and slow like you have to for stainless, so I have always used a nonstick. The Unison set has nonstick Sear pans, which help sear the meant (nonstick has a hard time doing that otherwise) and nonstick Slide pans, which are exactly what they sounds like - stuff just slides right out of the pan. I burnt carmel in mine, and it cleaned up with a little water and a paper towel. I know nonstick gets a bad rap, but as long as you don't use metal utensils in it, don't stack it, and don't use it above 500 degrees, it will last a good long time. My set has a lifetime warrenty, so if anything does go wrong, you just get a new pan.

I have a Hamilton Beach Stay or Go crockpot - it's one like the PP mentioned where the lid can be snapped shut so you can take it with you without worrying about it spilling.
  • I am in love with my Vitamix blender-pricey, but basically indestructable, and will last forever (my mom has had hers for nearly 20 years).  I also love my Calphalon Try-Ply Copper sauce pan and everything pan, and my stainless steel soup pot and strainer (copper is great because it heats up super fast).  I also love my Le Creuset large soup pot and smaller soup pot.

For dishes, I have plain white plates from C&B, but fun colored bowls that I bought at anthropologie.  Having plain basic plates makes it easy to have fun colored bowls or other accent pieces.  I also just bought a Sous Vide vacuum sealer (like food saver brand), and its actually REALLY cool--I think its going to save me money in the long run by helping me avoid freezer burn.  It also makes it super easy to make a huge batch of meatballs or muffins and vacuum seal to put in the freezer.

Currently on my wish list: Cuisinart Food Processor (I have a mini one for spices, but I want a full size one), and an electric kettle.
  • I think All Clad and Le Cruset are best for cookware, but they're pricey.

    Circulon cookware (and some bakeware!)

my mom had a circulon set and i loved cooking with it...so now i have one too! seriously LOVE cooking with it - hardly anything ever sticks, the coating stays in tact over decades, and it is high quality craftmanship (no broken or rickety handles, etc).  some of their lines are dishwasher safe, too!

i wasn't sold on the bakeware (i have a square pan, loaf pan, and casserole sized pan) since it has the circulon ridges on the bottom, but ive found that its great for roasts, breads, potatoes, veggies -- all the non-cookie related baking =)

bottom line - although it's one of the more pricey sets, it is truly one of the best made..... and you can typically find it on sale and use coupons at various stores.

  • I love my Analon pots and pans - I will never go back to using the cheap stuff ever again!

A cast iron dutch oven is one of the things that's going on our registry (via Amazon) that I am most excited about!  My mother has one, and I took it for granted ... I soooooo miss having it to cook with since I left home!  Glad to hear that Lodge is a good brand.
  • Ditto Lodge cast iron skillet and dutch oven. We inherited my FI's grandmother's set. They're probably 80 years old, and still in perfect shape.

As long as they're seasoned properly, they're equal to or better than non stick.

  • Thanks for all the responses!  This is super helpful and I hope other brides will also find this useful :-)
  • I love my Crockpot brand crockpot.  I use it all the time.  I got the one that has the buttons on it to set it for a particular amount of time.  After it finishes, it shuts off and keeps the food warm.  It's AWESOME.  And another tip... if you're cooking something that might stick to the sides and bottom of the crock pot (like cheese) Reynolds makes crockpot liners.  They make things so much easier than trying to maneuver a heavy crockpot insert in your sink.
