Same first and last name?

So...my first name is Lyndsay...and don't ya know, I am marrying a man who's last name is Lindsay.  What's the chances.

So what are everyone's thoughts on changing my last name.  So I would become Lyndsay Lindsay?  I'm so used to friends calling me that already (since it was so funny), but when I think about my career I think it sounds silly.  Thoughts?

Re: Same first and last name?

  • Would you consider the hyphen?  It more or less went out of vogue, even with us feminists in the 80's, but it'll put something between the two Lyndsay's :)  Like, Lyndsay Gardener-Lindsay...Or, you could start using your first and middle name professionally...Lyndsay Michelle Lindsay sounds less cartoony (depending on what your middle name is!!)

  • Personally, I just wouldn't change it. And yes, professionally, if I saw you made the conscious choice to call yourself Lindsay Lindsay (sorry if I misspelled) I would give you the side eye. It just depends on how important it is to you and your FI that you have the same last name. If it doesn't really matter to either of you, I'd just keep my maiden name.

  • The thing with a name is it's permanent.  I thought it would be amusing to name twin girls Melody and Harmony, but then realized that it would be funny for all of about ten minutes, then they'd resent me forever.  So I wouldn't make the choice based on the humor aspect, unless you're certain you'll still find it funny when you're 80.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I knew someone named William William William III.  We called him Chip.
  • What is your profession if you are worried about the professional side of things?

  • I'm really not sure what I would do, honestly.  There's a teller at my bank named Cheryl Sherrill.  It makes me giggle.
  • I would keep my name professionally, but use his socially.

Personally, in my profession, I know that people wouldn't take me seriously with a funny name.
  • I went to school with a William William.  He parents are the ones who named him that, I  can't imagaine volunteering to make my name that.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Piper, it's fine that you disagree with me and think I'm a moron, but I still stand by what I said.

  • On the flip side- be glad his last name isn't something like diick or butts.  or something even more vulgar.  I went to high school with a girl whose name was Gretchen Diick.  Then she married a guy names (idk) Butts.  I just remember everyone teasing about how she was moving around the anatomy.  Poor girl.

Go with it and have fun... If it turns into a problem "professionally", then hyphenate or use your maiden name.

[QUOTE]Piper, how about you offer a suggestion instead of neg what other people were saying?  Wouldn't that be a more constructive use of your time?

    YOU'RE my favorite.

Read my post.  "OP keep the last name if you want.  Don't let anyone tell you that it's "unprofessional" because it's not."

[QUOTE]have you always wanted to change your name to his since you were a little girl

    Now that would be sad.
  • I dated a guy named Dave David
  • I say take the last name if that's what you really want.  I would never think of anyone as unprofessional because of their name because it's rarely our choice as to what our name is (either our parents give it to us or we marry into it).  Honestly, I think it would you make your name very easy to remember and might be better for your business.  I would be much more apt to remember a "Lyndsey Lindsey" than a "Lyndsey Smith" or something like that.
  • I just spent Christmas with my extended family, and there were ongoing bouts of hilarity at a professional that had done this -- not malicious, just every time someone would say "oh, we need to call XYZ XYZ back!" everyone would grin, and her name was always said out because it amused people.

(I'm not saying her name or profession because we really wouldn't want to hurt her feelings, nor be google-able via this.)  She's good at her job, came highly recommended, and none of us forgot her name or would have trouble finding her again/recommending her.  And we didn't find it unprofessional of her to have taken her husband's name,  but we couldn't help being amused.
